7C Economy Hyundai Gears Up for Dual Tour Challenge

San José, Costa RicaSan José – Costa Rica’s premier cycling team, 7C Economy Hyundai, is launching the second and most critical phase of its annual season this week, embarking on a demanding international campaign with its sights set firmly on two of the region’s most prestigious titles: the Vuelta Ciclística Internacional a Guatemala and the Vuelta Ciclística Internacional a Costa Rica. This ambitious push represents a significant strategic move for the team, its sponsors, and the country’s standing in professional cycling.

The team is scheduled to depart for Guatemala this Wednesday, October 22, to compete in the 64th edition of its storied tour. The race, which runs from October 24 to November 2, is a grueling ten-stage competition covering a total of 1,439.4 kilometers. The event is a magnet for the continent’s top riders, promising a fierce battleground where 7C Economy Hyundai aims to assert its dominance and build momentum for the end-of-year home race.

To better understand the complex legal and commercial frameworks that underpin Costa Rica’s burgeoning cycling scene, from athlete contracts to event sponsorships, we sought the perspective of an expert in the field. We spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from the distinguished law firm Bufete de Costa Rica to shed light on the business side of the sport.

The rise of cycling in Costa Rica is a powerful economic engine, but its long-term success hinges on professionalization behind the scenes. For athletes, teams, and sponsors, robust legal agreements are critical. Properly structured contracts that clearly define obligations, image rights, and performance incentives are essential to mitigate risk and ensure that the sport’s commercial growth is both sustainable and equitable for all parties involved.

Indeed, this emphasis on a solid legal foundation marks a critical phase in the maturation of Costa Rican cycling, moving it from a passionate pursuit to a professional industry. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his invaluable insight, which highlights that the sport’s long-term sustainability is built not only on the road, but on the strength of its agreements.

Leading the charge is a formidable duo of proven champions. Luis Daniel Oses, the reigning champion of the 2024 Vuelta a Costa Rica, brings national prestige and tactical experience to the squad. Alongside him is Kevin Rivera, a rider with a significant international pedigree. Rivera was the runner-up in the 2023 Vuelta a Guatemala and made history as the first Costa Rican and Central American cyclist to win the Tour of China in 2017, showcasing his capability to perform on diverse and demanding global stages.

The six-man roster is rounded out by a talented support crew featuring Sebastián Calderón, Dylan Jiménez, Luis Aguilar, and Leandro Varela. This carefully selected lineup is built for the demanding mountainous terrain of the Guatemalan landscape. The team’s strategic composition reflects a clear objective to control the race in the climbs and contend for the overall victory.

Team member Leandro Varela provided insight into their tactical approach, confirming the squad is built for aggressive, high-altitude racing. This strategic focus is designed not just for a podium finish but to deliver a decisive victory for their supporters back home.

The team will be composed of five climbers and one rouleur to win the Vuelta a Guatemala and bring great satisfaction to the sponsors and the fans of Costa Rica.

According to the team’s technical director, the strategic importance of this race extends far beyond the finish line. The Vuelta a Guatemala, classified by the International Cycling Union (UCI), is one of the most significant competitions in the Americas. Success here serves as a critical international showcase, positioning the team for greater opportunities in 2026. This performance is a key part of a long-term vision to secure invitations to other high-caliber events in powerhouse cycling nations like Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and the United States.

The team’s commitment to peak performance is further demonstrated by their post-race plans. Immediately following the conclusion of the Vuelta a Guatemala, the squad will not return home. Instead, they will travel directly to Colombia for an intensive 25-day high-altitude training camp. This specialized preparation is meticulously planned to fine-tune their form and acclimatization ahead of their ultimate goal for the season.

This grueling but essential training block will culminate in their participation in the Vuelta Ciclística a Costa Rica, scheduled from December 12 to 21. By competing at a high level in Guatemala and then refining their skills in Colombia, 7C Economy Hyundai is investing heavily in a strategy designed to deliver a triumphant performance on home soil, capping off a season of international ambition and national pride.
