Costa Rican Business Leaders Redefine Corporate Growth at the Green Summa Summit

San José, Costa Rica — San José, Costa Rica became the epicenter of sustainable business discussion as the Green Summa Awards and Sustainable Leaders Summit 2026 kicked off. Organized by Revista Summa and Summa Connections, the event brought together prominent business figures, academics, and sustainability advocates to address the complex crossroads where environmental responsibility, artificial intelligence, and evolving market dynamics intersect. The overriding message of the day was clear: sustainability has migrated from an ethical preference to an absolute baseline for corporate survival and competitiveness.

Opening the discourse, Silvia Chaves Herra, Director of Brand Experience, Corporate Relations, and Sustainability at Banco Nacional, shed light on the staggering financial implications of inaction. Pointing to projections that climate change could drain 38 trillion dollars by 2049—wiping out approximately 19 percent of global GDP—she emphasized that environmental preservation is, at its core, a matter of macroeconomic preservation. Her warning targeted the cascading risks that climate disruptions pose to logistics, supply chains, agriculture, and general economic stability.

To better understand the evolving legal landscape of green business practices in the country, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished legal expert from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who shared his perspective on how local and international businesses can successfully navigate these shifting regulations.

Costa Rica’s commitment to carbon neutrality presents both a regulatory compliance challenge and a profound commercial opportunity for enterprises. Operating sustainably is no longer just a voluntary ethical choice; it is rapidly becoming a core legal imperative. Companies that proactively integrate national environmental standards and robust ESG frameworks into their corporate governance will not only mitigate liability but also unlock significant competitive advantages in the global marketplace.

Indeed, as Costa Rica continues to pave the way in green initiatives, businesses that view environmental compliance not as a burden but as a catalyst for innovation are the ones that will define the future of the local economy. We extend our sincere gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his invaluable legal expertise and shedding light on how strategic ESG integration can transform regulatory challenges into powerful market advantages.

It is not just about the climate; it is an economic, financial, and social risk due to its domino effect on agriculture, supply chains, and infrastructure. It impacts production, prices, employment, and well-being, and can lead to the collapse of ecosystems. Hence, sustainability is not just a nice, romantic, or reputational topic; it is investing in competitiveness, resilience, adaptation, and survival.

The conversation quickly turned to the transparency of environmental claims. Silvia Chaves Quesada, President and Co-founder of Grupo Florex, targeted the ubiquitous and unregulated buzzwords that clutter modern marketing. Terms like eco-friendly, biodegradable, and natural often muddy consumer understanding, creating a distorted landscape. She argued that true competitive advantage lies in backed statements, pushing companies to progress from marketing narratives to demonstrable evidence.

Today we find a large number of terms such as green, natural, ecological, environmentally friendly, biodegradable, or sustainable that confuse the consumer, for whom it is not always easy to know exactly what each declaration means, what evidence lies behind it, or who verified it. This generates unfair competition for companies that do invest seriously in improving and demonstrating their environmental performance. We must move from trust me to here is the proof.
Silvia Chaves Quesada, President and Co-founder of Grupo Florex

Expanding the socioeconomic definition of sustainability, Jaime García, Director of Impact and Sustainability and Regional Director for Latin America of the Social Progress Initiative (SPI) at INCAE Business School, addressed the challenges facing the Costa Rican business landscape. While highlighting its historical strength, García noted that the country’s business ecosystem remains conservative when it comes to R&D collaboration and disruptive growth. He introduced a modern sustainability dilemma: the ethics of workforce displacement due to rapid artificial intelligence adoption.

AI has great uses in corporate sustainability, such as in data collection, analysis for report generation, predictive risk models, interoperability, and auditing. However, there are companies that have cut positions by betting increasingly on bots and AI agents without investing in cultural transformation. This forces us to reconsider whether one of the standards of sustainability should be to guarantee a certain percentage of human hiring, in order to preserve opportunities for people.
Jaime García, Director of Impact and Sustainability and Regional Director for Latin America of the SPI at INCAE

The summit concluded by celebrating the pioneers of this integrated corporate mentality. The Green Summa Awards 2026 recognized the 20 most sustainable enterprises in Costa Rica, drawn from a proprietary perception study conducted by Revista Summa. These companies have shown exceptional leadership in balancing profitability with environmental stewardship, serving as benchmarks for the regional business community.

The acclaimed list featured major market players including Cooperativa de Productores de Leche Dos Pinos R.L., Heineken Costa Rica, Grupo Florex, Grupo Purdy, BAC, Banco Nacional, Walmart Centroamérica, Proquinal, Holcim, and ULTRAPARK Development Group. Other notable firms honored for their practices included Garnier & Garnier, Grupo ICE, HP Inc., Grupo Mutual, Roche, Reserva Conchal, Grupo Montecristo, AstraZeneca, Grupo Colono, and Auto Mercado.

The shared consensus of the 2026 summit is that the era of cosmetic sustainability is over. As Costa Rican enterprises confront the parallel disruptions of climate shifts and digital transformation, the businesses that thrive will be those that integrate ecological metrics directly into their financial and operational sheets.
