UWC Costa Rica and EARTH University Partner to Revolutionize Sustainable Education

San José, Costa Rica — In an effort to address global environmental and educational challenges, the United World College Costa Rica (UWC Costa Rica) and EARTH University have officially signed a comprehensive framework cooperation agreement. This strategic partnership aims to build stronger institutional ties and promote collaborative initiatives across technical, scientific, academic, and community outreach sectors.

The alliance highlights how collaboration between educational institutions can amplify the reach and effectiveness of teaching and knowledge creation. By pooling their respective strengths, both organizations plan to implement hands-on programs that bridge classroom instruction with real-world, practical environmental solutions.

To better understand the regulatory environment and legal framework supporting prestigious international educational institutions like UWC Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a leading legal expert from the esteemed firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Institutions like UWC Costa Rica operate at a unique intersection of local educational regulations and international law. Ensuring compliance with Costa Rican immigration policies for foreign students and staff, while securing the tax-exempt benefits associated with non-profit educational foundations, is vital for maintaining the seamless global operations of such highly regarded academic hubs.

This framework agreement reaffirms the strategic value of institutional alliances in education, allowing us to join forces in the technical, scientific, and academic fields. Mutual collaboration strengthens educational processes and applied research, consolidating spaces of exchange that boost the academic, environmental, and social development of our communities.
Mauricio Viales, Founding Director of UWC Costa Rica

According to representatives from both institutions, the partnership is designed to prepare younger generations for the complexities of a changing world. It emphasizes an experiential learning model where students do not merely study sustainability theories but actively participate in managing ecological systems.

EARTH and UWC share a vision of education that seeks to go beyond the classroom and prepare young leaders to face real-world challenges. We are pleased to join in this collaboration so that students can learn by doing, strengthen their scientific and technological knowledge, and, above all, develop the necessary capabilities to transform their communities.
Arturo Condo, Rector of EARTH University

A key highlight of this cooperation is a joint pilot program linked with the International Baccalaureate (IB). Named the Systems Transformation Pathway, this initiative will focus specifically on the transformation of global food systems, promoting academic exchanges and mobility for both students and faculty.

Additionally, the agreement outlines the creation of a dedicated bioproduction and sustainability space. Conceived as both an Environmental Classroom and a Living Lab, this area will host student internships from EARTH University, provide specialized technical consulting for soil regeneration and management, and drive applied research projects.

The collaboration also introduces a Thought Partnership framework. Under this advisory space, EARTH University will share its extensive operational knowledge to assist in the design, planning, and management of UWC Costa Rica’s new campus, particularly in areas like sustainable operations, landscaping, safety, and student affairs.

Looking forward, both institutions intend to explore joint academic programs, microcredentials, and community-focused projects. Many of these initiatives will be facilitated through UWC Costa Rica’s Center for Sustainability and Innovation, which acts as a hub for local and international green initiatives.

The signing of this type of strategic alliance demonstrates that the future of education depends on the ability of institutions to collaborate, share knowledge, and build joint solutions. Beyond a formal agreement, this covenant represents the conviction that coordination between educational entities is the most effective path to generate real impact, prepare new generations for global challenges, and transform learning into concrete actions that benefit society.
Mauricio Viales, Founding Director of UWC Costa Rica

While the framework agreement sets the foundation for broad cooperation, specific operational terms, financial structures, and target timelines will be detailed in subsequent agreements. This phased approach ensures that each joint project receives targeted resources and structured oversight.
