Uber Launches Uber Taxi to Integrate Traditional Red Taxis in Costa Rica

Uber Launches Uber Taxi to Integrate Traditional Red Taxis in Costa Rica

San José, Costa Rica — The transport dynamic in Costa Rica is undergoing a historic shift with the official launch of Uber Taxi. Starting today, commuters in the country will be able to summon the iconic traditional “red taxis” directly through the Uber smartphone application. This development marks a significant milestone in the integration of traditional public transport with modern digital mobility platforms, aiming to end years of operational rivalry.

By introducing Uber Taxi, the multinational tech giant is attempting to bridge the gap between traditional cab drivers and digital-native passengers. Users opening the Uber app will now see a new option alongside standard ride-hailing services, allowing them to explicitly request a traditional taxi. This integration promises to bring the ease of digital booking to a fleet that has historically operated primarily on street hails.

To analyze the regulatory and market shifts surrounding the integration of traditional red taxis into the Uber platform in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with prominent legal expert Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from the firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who offered his professional perspective on the legal challenges and opportunities of this alliance.

The alliance between Uber and traditional taxis in Costa Rica marks a significant evolution in the local transportation sector, bridging the gap between collaborative economy platforms and public service concessionaires. Legally, this integration demands a careful balancing act to ensure compliance with both the Public Transport Council regulations and modern antitrust standards, ultimately aiming for a legal framework that guarantees legal certainty for all operators and safety for users.

Indeed, striking this delicate regulatory balance is essential for fostering a modern, safe, and equitable transport ecosystem that benefits all Costa Ricans. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his valuable perspective on this pivotal legal transition.

The business rationale behind this launch is supported by strong consumer data. According to a recent Mobility Study conducted by prestigious polling firm CID Gallup, there is an overwhelming appetite for modernized taxi services in the country. The survey revealed that nine out of ten Costa Ricans would be willing to utilize traditional red taxis in their daily lives if they had the convenience of requesting them through a mobile application.

Uber Taxi connects two experiences that Costa Ricans already know: the traditional taxi and Uber’s technology. Now users have an additional option to get around and taxi drivers have a new way to connect with those looking for a trip.

Local taxi drivers are already responding to this digital transition. At launch, more than 300 traditional taxicab operators have registered on the Uber platform. By adopting this technology, drivers gain access to an entirely new channel of digital users, which is expected to optimize their daily operations, reduce idle time on the streets, and ultimately boost their overall earnings.

One of the key features of Uber Taxi in Costa Rica is its pricing structure. The service will operate with fares that align with the official, regulated tariffs established for traditional taxis. However, the system adds a layer of transparency previously unavailable in standard taxi meters: before initiating a trip, riders will receive an upfront cost estimate. This feature addresses a long-standing consumer demand for predictability in pricing.

Security remains a central focus of the new service. Both passengers and taxi drivers utilizing Uber Taxi will have access to the full suite of security tools built into the Uber application. This includes GPS tracking of the trip, the ability to share travel routes with trusted contacts, and access to emergency assistance features, ensuring a safer and more transparent environment for both parties.

Costa Rica is not the first market to witness this hybrid transport model. Uber Taxi is already a proven concept globally, operating successfully in dozens of countries, including the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, and Chile. These international precedents suggest that combining traditional taxi fleets with modern application dispatch systems results in mutual benefits, expanding the market rather than cannibalizing it.

Uber Taxi proves that technology and the traditional taxi can work together. We want Costa Ricans to have more options to move around and taxi drivers to find in technology a tool to connect with more users. This is another step towards a more integrated, transparent, and accessible mobility.
Laura Santillán, General Manager of Uber for Central America and the Caribbean

As urban mobility demands continue to grow in Costa Rica’s metropolitan areas, the coexistence of digital platforms and traditional public transit appears inevitable. The introduction of Uber Taxi suggests that collaboration, rather than competition, may define the future of transport in the region. Whether this integration will fully resolve old tensions remains to be seen, but it undoubtedly offers consumers unprecedented flexibility.
