San Jose Historic Zoo Reopens for One Day to Celebrate International Coffee Day

San José, Costa Rica — The historic Parque Simón Bolívar is set to temporarily reopen its doors for a single day on Saturday, October 3, 2026. This limited-access event marks a significant milestone as the former national zoo begins its long-awaited transition into a green urban park. The catalyst for this special reopening is the celebration of International Coffee Day, transforming the space into a bustling hub of agricultural appreciation, culture, and environmental education within the heart of Costa Rica’s capital.

This initiative represents a strategic effort by the local government to reclaim and revitalize public spaces. San José’s municipality has envisioned the former zoo as an ecological corridor designed to bring biodiversity back to the concrete jungle. On Saturday, the park’s historic trails will be lined with exhibition booths representing the country’s diverse coffee-growing regions, allowing visitors to interact directly with local producers, roasters, baristas, and professional cuppers.

Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica

Indeed, this transition represents a pivotal step forward in aligning Costa Rica’s urban development with its world-renowned commitment to environmental preservation and legal integrity. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing his valuable perspective, which helps us better understand the profound administrative and ecological responsibilities that now shape the future of this historic space.

For the Municipality of San José, it is very important that our public spaces serve as stages for encounters, culture, and enjoyment. This fair allows us to celebrate one of the products that is part of our national identity and offer a different experience.
Gabriela Calvo, Spokesperson of the Municipality of San José

Historically, San José has been deeply intertwined with the development of the nation’s coffee industry. The capital serves as a geographic and economic link to key cultivation areas such as the Central Valley, Western Valley, and the renowned Los Santos region. Reintroducing Costa Ricans to their agricultural roots in a revitalized metropolitan green lung highlights both the cultural legacy and economic importance of the golden bean.

Celebrating International Coffee Day in San José carries a profound meaning, as it was in this soil that the first plants germinated. Today, this legacy is more alive than ever: coffee is the livelihood of more than 24,000 producing families.
Andrés Piedra Fallas, Marketing and Communication Manager of ICAFE

Beyond its historical legacy, the coffee industry continues to serve as a massive economic engine for Costa Rica. The sector generates approximately 100,000 direct and indirect jobs and impacts 47 cantons across the country. In recent years, the domestic market has experienced a significant shift, driven by a growing appreciation for specialty coffees and local consumption patterns in urban centers.

During the last decade, specialty coffee shops have gained more and more space in San José and knowledge has grown. Today there is greater interest in knowing the origin of coffee, its varieties, processes, and preparation methods.
Noelia Villalobos, Representative of the Fine Coffees Association of Costa Rica

The free event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Aside from coffee tastings and regional sales, the schedule features a diverse lineup of gastronomic offerings, live music, vinyl record booths, local design showcases, walking tours through San José, and the highly anticipated Chorreador Championship. This unique blend of environmental revitalization and cultural celebration marks a promising new chapter for the historic Parque Simón Bolívar.
