Latin American Businesses Turn to Startups to Solve Critical Environmental Challenges

San José, Costa Rica — Latin America’s private sector is undergoing a profound paradigm shift. Environmental conservation has evolved from a secondary corporate social responsibility concern to a core strategic pillar necessary for business continuity. A groundbreaking study titled “From Resilience to Solutions: Activating Natural Capital,” co-published by the Swiss initiative Innovate 4 Nature (I4N) and FUNDES, highlights this transition across ten productive sectors in the region.

The most striking revelation of the study is what researchers call an “inverted funnel” in corporate sustainability maturity. While a staggering 85.2% of surveyed organizations express a firm commitment to collaborating with startups and innovative ventures to drive sustainable solutions, a much lower percentage has completed basic preliminary work. Specifically, only 74.1% have mapped their environmental impacts, and just 70.4% have formally diagnosed their ecological risks and opportunities.

To better understand the evolving legal landscape of corporate sustainability in Latin America, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a leading legal expert from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who shared his perspective on how regional businesses must navigate these shifting regulatory waters.

In Latin America, corporate sustainability has transitioned from a voluntary marketing initiative to a critical legal mandate. As governments across the region implement stricter environmental regulations and ESG reporting requirements, businesses must proactively integrate compliance into their corporate governance to mitigate litigation risks and secure international investment.

Indeed, this regulatory shift underscores that sustainability is no longer a mere branding exercise but a fundamental pillar of modern corporate strategy in Latin America, essential for both securing global capital and ensuring long-term operational resilience. We are deeply grateful to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing his invaluable legal expertise and shedding light on this crucial transition for regional businesses.

Unlike major multinational corporations, where environmental vulnerabilities are typically buried deep within global supply chains, regional enterprises in Latin America face a more immediate reality. The study reveals that 55.6% of participating businesses—primarily medium-sized organizations—report that their primary environmental exposure and impact occur directly within their own physical operations. This operational proximity makes nature conservation an immediate, high-stakes factor for daily business resilience.

The data shows that regional businesses are fully convinced of the value nature holds for their business continuity, but they face a clear technical gap in measuring and quantitatively integrating it.

This technical gap is further underscored by the low adoption of formal evaluation frameworks. Fewer than half of the surveyed companies utilize recognized international metrics such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), LEAP, Science Based Targets Network (SBTN), or ISO standards. Consequently, businesses are bypassing overly complex financial tools and theoretical reports in favor of pragmatic, collaborative efforts.

Less than half of the organizations currently use recognized standard and reporting frameworks such as TNFD, LEAP, SBTN, or ISO. For this reason, the market is not demanding more theoretical diagnoses or complex initial financial structures, but rather flexible strategic alliances, knowledge transfer, and capacity-building to solve shared challenges, especially around water management and the circular economy.
Mónica Gutiérrez, Sustainability Leader at FUNDES

Water resource management has emerged as the most critical and recurring issue for regional enterprises. The study identifies water as a primary environmental impact (35%), the top physical operational risk (32%), the greatest area requiring innovation (30%), and a non-negotiable strategic priority (26%). On the opportunity side, the circular economy leads business preferences at 32%, offering companies tangible, short-term avenues to cut costs, revalue waste, and optimize resources without demanding a complete overhaul of their business models.

The research also exposes significant behavioral differences across industries. The agro-alimentary sector leads in awareness, with 100% of companies identifying their environmental impacts and risks, yet only 38% apply formal international metrics. In contrast, manufacturing shows a disconnect between physical footprint and corporate analysis, mapping 80% of impacts but incorporating only 60% into risk management systems. The energy and utilities sector presents the sharpest contrast, assigning nature a perfect strategic importance score of 10/10 while registering a dismal 33.3% rate in formal risk identification.

To bridge this gap between strategic intent and technical execution, Innovate 4 Nature and FUNDES have launched an open call for Latin American enterprises. Companies are invited to join a regional hub headquartered in Costa Rica. This hub will provide access to acceleration programs and collaborative “Action Labs,” specifically structured to align private sector needs with validated, startup-driven technological solutions.
