Grameen Costa Rica Wins Top Latin American Social Impact Award

Grameen Costa Rica Wins Top Latin American Social Impact Award

San José, Costa Rica — Grameen Costa Rica, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering low-income women entrepreneurs, has achieved a historic milestone in international microfinance. The institution secured the highest score among Latin American microfinance institutions in the prestigious 2026 Microfinance Index, compiled by the social impact measurement firm 60 Decibels.

Scoring an outstanding 85 points, Grameen Costa Rica was honored with the Social Impact Award. This recognition underscores the critical role the non-profit plays in supporting women who seek to generate their own income and launch small businesses but regularly encounter systemic barriers in the traditional banking sector.

To better understand the legal and operational landscape surrounding microfinance initiatives like Grameen Costa Rica, TicosLand.com consulted with prominent legal expert Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who offered his analysis on the regulatory mechanisms that govern social entrepreneurship in the country.

The implementation of the Grameen model in Costa Rica highlights the critical need for a legal framework that accommodates microfinance. To truly empower vulnerable sectors, our legal system must balance robust consumer protection laws with regulatory flexibility, ensuring that microcredit institutions can operate efficiently without being stifled by bureaucratic hurdles designed for traditional banking.

Indeed, adapting Costa Rica’s legal framework to accommodate the unique dynamics of microfinance is essential for fostering sustainable financial inclusion and empowering vulnerable communities. We extend our sincere gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his valuable perspective on this critical issue, reminding us that legislative agility is key to unlocking the full potential of initiatives like Grameen Costa Rica.

The rigorous assessment conducted in Costa Rica involved detailed interviews with 275 female clients of Grameen Costa Rica. The data collected highlights the profound financial exclusion these women faced prior to partnering with the organization. A striking 85% of those surveyed were accessing a credit loan for the very first time in their lives, while 51% stated they could not have easily found a viable alternative source of financing.

To put these metrics into perspective, the Microfinance Index 2026 gathered experiences from more than 18,700 clients associated with 65 financial providers across 35 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The global sample was predominantly female, representing 68% of the total respondents, with an average age of 42. Among the participating institutions, non-profits and NGOs represented 17%, alongside non-bank financial companies, credit unions, and traditional banks.

The analytical methodology deployed by 60 Decibels goes far beyond simple access to credit. It measures six core dimensions of social impact: access, product impact, household impact, client protection, resilience, and agency. The last dimension—agency—is particularly crucial, as it evaluates changes in self-confidence and active participation in household financial decisions.

The empirical findings indicate that Grameen Costa Rica’s intervention drives tangible transformations in both business operations and the daily lives of beneficiaries. According to the index, 49% of the surveyed women reported a significant improvement in their business operations. Furthermore, 56% stated that their overall quality of life had improved substantially since receiving financial support.

Beyond pure business growth, the benefits also transcended economic metrics, deeply affecting personal development and domestic dynamics. Approximately 67% of the female clients reported experiencing greater self-confidence, while 54% reported a notable increase in their influence over key household decisions, reflecting a shift in gender dynamics and empowerment.

This recognition has a special meaning because it arises from the voice of the women themselves. Behind the figures, there are stories of those who found an opportunity to start or strengthen a business, generate their own income, and contribute to the well-being of their families. Having those experiences stand out in an international measurement reaffirms the importance of continuing to open financing opportunities for those who have traditionally faced the greatest barriers to accessing them.
Mario Morera, General Manager of Grameen Costa Rica

The voluntary nature of the Microfinance Index means the results showcase the exceptional performance of the participating institutions rather than representing the entire global microfinance industry. Nonetheless, Grameen Costa Rica’s triumph serves as a powerful model for how targeted micro-loans can break the cycle of poverty and foster authentic social mobility in Central America.
