Auto Mercado Launches Movimiento Rosa to Fund Thousands of Free Rural Mammograms Across Costa Rica

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rican supermarket chain Auto Mercado has officially launched its annual national solidarity initiative, Movimiento Rosa, with an ambitious fundraising target of ₡250 million (approximately $485,000 USD). The campaign aims to allocate these financial resources toward providing free early-detection breast cancer mammograms for women living in remote and socioeconomically vulnerable rural communities across the country by 2027. Through a multi-tiered corporate and public partnership, the initiative underscores the growing role of private sector intervention in bridging public healthcare access gaps in Costa Rica.

A substantial portion of the fundraising total—projected at more than ₡110 million—is expected to come directly from micro-donations made by customers at register checkouts across all Auto Mercado supermarket locations and Vindi convenience stores throughout October. Furthermore, the private effort brings together 55 commercial suppliers participating with over 500 promotional products, alongside an annual direct cash contribution from the supermarket chain itself.

To further broaden public participation and facilitate seamless digital contributions, organizers have integrated mobile payment channels into the fundraising architecture. Citizens throughout Costa Rica can make direct contributions via SINPE Móvil by sending funds to the designated number 8466-3888, ensuring that both store patrons and remote supporters can contribute to the medical fund regardless of their physical location.

Capital raised through Movimiento Rosa directly funds the mobile medical infrastructure operated by Alsalus, a collaborative health alliance designed to bring specialized diagnostic technology directly to underserved populations. This year, Alsalus expanded its operational itinerary from 13 to 18 rural communities, incorporating high-need areas such as Paquera, Cóbano, Corralillo-La Sierra, San Vito, and Golfito into its routing.

Location prioritization for these specialized mobile clinics is determined in close coordination with the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS). The state healthcare administrator evaluates geographic isolation indices, regional socio-economic challenges, and institutional healthcare access barriers to select communities where women face the steepest obstacles in securing routine preventative care.

Crucially, the diagnostic services provided by the mobile units maintain an inclusive healthcare mandate. Free mammogram screenings are available to both insured and uninsured women aged 40 to 75. To qualify, candidates must either have never undergone a mammogram in their lifetime or have not received a diagnostic screening within the preceding two years, effectively targeting those at highest risk of undetected illness.

Recent operational figures demonstrate the substantial impact of scaling mobile healthcare infrastructure. In 2025, supported by the addition of a second fully equipped mobile unit, Alsalus conducted 12,394 mammograms—effectively doubling the volume executed in 2024. This expanded clinical reach identified 101 cases requiring specialized biopsies, ultimately confirming 27 early-stage breast cancer diagnoses that might otherwise have gone undetected until advanced stages.

Looking ahead, Movimiento Rosa and the Alsalus alliance have established a firm milestone for 2027, aiming to deliver another 12,000 comprehensive diagnostic mammograms to rural women. Local appointments can be coordinated through corresponding community health centers (EBAIS), with updated mobile route schedules published transparently on www.alsalus.org as the alliance continues its mission to reduce breast cancer mortality across Costa Rica.
