AI Reshaping Education in Costa Rica

San José, Costa Rica — San José, Costa Rica – The AWS Innovation Day 2025 held at Universidad Latina brought together experts in education and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to discuss the transformative impact of this technology on students, teachers, and the educational system as a whole.

The event, attended by students, educators, businesses, and national and international experts, focused on advancements in AI, cloud computing, and advanced analytics, fostering multi-sector dialogue, digital talent development, and strategic partnerships.

To understand the complex legal landscape surrounding Artificial Intelligence, we sought the expert opinion of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from the esteemed Bufete de Costa Rica.

The rapid advancement of AI presents exciting opportunities, but also significant legal challenges. Businesses utilizing AI must navigate evolving regulations regarding data privacy, intellectual property, and liability for algorithmic decisions. Proactive legal counsel is crucial to ensuring compliance and mitigating potential risks in this dynamic technological environment.

Innovation Day 2025 has been a proposal that we have been working on together with AWS, and it is not just another event on our institutional agenda. It is a turning point, not only to talk about technology but also to reflect as a country and as an educational system on the type of talent we need to train if we want to remain current, competitive, and prepared for the future. This is a strategic commitment, to be able to incorporate, from the academic world, world-class content in cloud computing and digital skills in emerging technologies that are already transforming the industry.
Alexander Vargas, Academic Vice-Rector of Universidad Latina

A key forum on “AI Skills for Employability” highlighted the perspectives of technology experts on AI’s influence on education. The discussions emphasized the need for students to learn how to effectively utilize AI tools available online to augment human intelligence.

It is important that today students and people learn what to do with these tools. There are many available on the Internet that you simply connect to different platforms and can extend the capabilities that human intelligence has today. I think this is a very marked trend, something that will become increasingly easier. The second skill, which is not technical, but I always emphasize it a lot, is the issue of curiosity and constantly seeing what things are going to work for me. Constant training and learning is a fundamental element.
Gerardo Arroyo, Cloud Technology Director of Novacom

The potential of AI to personalize education was another key theme. Experts cited examples from the United States where schools are using AI models to provide individualized instruction in core subjects, allowing teachers to focus on developing soft skills and other essential areas.

The use of AI can be incredible for personalizing teaching, not necessarily to teach the same thing in the same way to all 30 students I have in the classroom, but to be able to arrive and personalize. For example, in the United States, there are already schools that put children in 3-hour blocks of different 30-minute segments during the day to teach them mathematics and science through an AI model that teaches them and gives them feedback. And for the rest of the day, what the teachers do is become a coach, a guide, so to speak. And what they do is guide and coach them, for example, in soft skills, communication, music, sports, etc. It’s something so critical and so important that we need to see it from a transversal point of view and from the youngest children and in all subjects. There should be the use of AI in all subjects, all grades.
Josué Montero, CEO of EduTech

The role of certifications in AI and their impact on employability also sparked discussion. Experts underscored the value of certifications validated by academic institutions and industry leaders like AWS in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Regarding the importance of certifications in AI and the employability of people, there is a debate, since they are becoming more common every day: is it a complete career or certifications? It seems to me that it is a very beautiful time to live as a teacher and as a consultant on public policy issues because it allows us to redesign many things. Certifications have a very interesting instrumental value because they allow, in theory, to vary the knowledge of the person and, on the other hand, to update knowledge. I think certifications are very important as long as they are properly validated by an academic institution; there is also validation from the private sector, for example, AWS certifications have a very high standard. Certifications will definitely become more important because this changes every week.

A specialized workshop for AWS Academy educators featured presentations by Amazon representatives and a hands-on laboratory focusing on AI teaching methodologies.
