A landmark training initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Public Education (MEP), is equipping the nation’s school librarians with the skills needed to navigate the complexities of AI and guide both students and teachers in its responsible use.
The specialized training was a central feature of the second Workshop on Fostering Reading and Writing, an event organized by the MEP. This effort stems from an initial collaboration between the ministry, the Latin American University of Science and Technology (ULACIT), and UNESCO. Recognizing the urgent need to address the challenges posed by AI, the MEP’s Department of School Libraries and Learning Resource Centers requested a dedicated program to build these new competencies.

Leading the session was Fabián Mata Monge, coordinator of the Information and Resources Center at ULACIT. His presentation, titled “Free Artificial Intelligence Tools for Library Management and Reading Promotion,” provided librarians with a practical framework for leveraging AI ethically and strategically. The workshop focused on strengthening the digital skills of library professionals, preparing them for an evolving educational landscape.
Participants were introduced to a range of practical applications for free AI tools. The training demonstrated how these technologies can streamline administrative and technical tasks, assist in the creation of dynamic educational materials, and enhance user services. Librarians learned to design innovative reading promotion activities and support student research processes more effectively. During the session, Google’s NotebookLM was highlighted as a powerful example of how AI can be used to create audiovisual resources and bolster overall library management.
Artificial intelligence does not replace the professional judgment of librarians. On the contrary, it expands their ability to guide students and teachers in the responsible use of information. Librarians were coached on how to teach students to verify AI-generated information and to avoid an over-reliance on these platforms. Mata warned that using AI without proper guidance can lead to the spread of inaccurate information, a decline in critical thinking skills, and an increase in academic dishonesty.
