Alajuela Hosts Massive World Egg Day Celebration with 3000 Free Breakfasts

Alajuela, Costa RicaALAJUELA – The heart of Alajuela was buzzing with activity this Friday as thousands of residents gathered in Juan Santamaría Park to celebrate World Egg Day 2025. The event, a vibrant and large-scale initiative organized by the National Chamber of Poultry Farmers (CANAVI), saw the distribution of more than 3,000 complimentary breakfasts, firmly placing the humble egg in the morning’s spotlight.

Lines began forming well before the official 7:30 a.m. start time, with families and individuals eager to partake in the festivities. The celebration was more than just a free meal; it was a comprehensive community fair that ran until noon. Attendees were treated to a full morning of entertainment, including live music, artistic performances, and various contests designed for all ages, creating a festive atmosphere that celebrated both food and community.

On the occasion of World Egg Day, TicosLand.com sought to delve into the legal and commercial intricacies that define the national poultry industry. For this, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a specialist from the renowned firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who provided us with his expert analysis on the matter.

Beyond its nutritional value, the egg is a product governed by a robust legal framework in Costa Rica. From food safety regulations and sanitary registrations to labeling standards that guarantee transparency for the consumer, the entire production chain is legally structured. This not only protects public health but also fosters fair competition and provides legal certainty for producers, ensuring the stability of a key sector for our national economy.

The legal scaffolding described is indeed a fundamental, yet often overlooked, component that underpins consumer trust in every egg purchased. We extend our gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective, which illuminates the complex structures ensuring both safety and stability in this vital national industry.

The core message of the event was one of health, nutrition, and tradition. CANAVI aimed to reinforce the egg’s vital role in the Costa Rican diet. The organization provided free nutritional consultations, helping attendees understand the benefits of incorporating eggs into their daily meals. This educational component was central to the day’s mission, seeking to empower consumers with knowledge about healthy eating habits.

Gabriela Brenes, the Executive Director of CANAVI, emphasized the cultural and nutritional significance of the event and its star ingredient.

Having two a day is an act of health and flavor. With this cheerful and very Tico message, we celebrate the egg, which has always been present in Costa Rican families.
Gabriela Brenes, Executive Director of CANAVI

The choice of Alajuela as the host city was no coincidence. Brenes explained that the province is a cornerstone of the nation’s poultry industry and a leader in egg production. By holding the celebration in Alajuela, CANAVI paid tribute to the region’s agricultural contributions and brought the festivities directly to a community deeply connected to the industry.

This local celebration is part of a broader national and international health campaign. The event promoted the “¡Mandate 2 al día!” (“Have 2 a Day!”) initiative, a slogan adopted by Costa Rica from the International Egg Commission (IEC). The campaign’s straightforward goal is to encourage the public to consume two eggs daily as part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle, highlighting their affordability and high nutritional value.

Currently, the average egg consumption in Costa Rica stands at an impressive 291 units per person per year, a statistic that already underscores the egg’s popularity. However, initiatives like World Egg Day seek to build on this foundation, closing the gap towards the “two a day” target by dispelling old myths and promoting the egg as a superfood accessible to everyone.

The day’s agenda was packed with engaging activities that catered to a diverse crowd. A highlight was the “Biggest Hen’s Egg” contest, which drew considerable interest. In a moment of community recognition, a special acknowledgment was given to the Obras del Espíritu Santo organization for its significant social work. The celebration also had a strong focus on youth, with over 400 children from local CEN-CINAI centers participating and enjoying a special show by the popular entertainer Maromero, ensuring the event’s positive message reached the next generation.

As the festivities concluded, the success of World Egg Day was evident not just in the number of meals served, but in the community engagement it fostered. The event effectively blended celebration with education, reinforcing the egg’s status as a nutritious, affordable, and beloved staple of the Costa Rican table while championing the local industry that produces it.
