Alajuelense Battles to Semifinal Stalemate Against Olimpia

Alajuela, Costa RicaALAJUELA – Liga Deportiva Alajuelense emerged from a contentious first leg of the Central American Cup semifinals with a 1-1 draw against Honduran giants Olimpia, leaving the series precariously balanced ahead of next week’s decisive match. The spirited encounter at the Alejandro Morera Soto stadium on Thursday night showcased the intensity and passion characteristic of a regional derby, a sentiment echoed by Alajuelense’s head coach, Óscar Ramírez.

The veteran manager praised the competitive nature of the match, acknowledging the tactical challenges presented by a formidable opponent. The draw means everything is still to play for, with the fate of the tie to be decided in the cauldron of a Honduran stadium in one week’s time. For Ramírez, the result was a fair reflection of a closely fought battle.

It was a classic, back-and-forth Central American match. At times, we executed in attack. They are a complicated team; they are strong on the wings and have two very tall players in the box.
Óscar Ramírez, Head Coach

Beyond the on-field action, Ramírez revealed the significant strategic hurdles he faced even before kickoff. Crafting the starting lineup became a major challenge due to a combination of suspensions and injuries that depleted his defensive options. The absence of regular starter Ronald Matarrita due to a prior sanction forced the technical staff to make a difficult choice for a high-stakes game.

The coach ultimately placed his trust in Deylan Paz to fill the void, a decision that was part of a larger, more complex puzzle. Other key players were also unavailable, compounding the selection dilemma and forcing tactical adjustments against a physically imposing Olimpia squad known for its aerial threat and pace on the flanks.

For me, it was the most complex decision, considering what happens day-to-day. Elían Quesada took a knock, and we preferred not to include him even on the bench. With John Paul Ruiz, it was a technical determination. I feel what happened (the disciplinary issue) affected him; I spoke with him, and we came to an understanding.
Óscar Ramírez, Head Coach

In a significant blow to their second-leg aspirations, Alajuelense will be without star forward Joel Campbell. Ramírez made the tactical decision to substitute Campbell at halftime after he received a yellow card in the first period. The caution triggered a suspension, ruling him out of the return fixture. Losing a player of Campbell’s caliber and international experience presents a major obstacle for the team’s quest for a third regional title.

With the series now shifting to Honduras for the final showdown on Thursday, October 30, the path forward for Alajuelense is clear but challenging. To advance to the final, the Costa Rican side must secure a victory on foreign soil or achieve a high-scoring draw of 2-2 or greater. A 1-1 result would force extra time, while a scoreless draw would see them eliminated on the away goals rule, making an offensive mindset an absolute necessity.
