San José, Costa Rica — At just 20 years old, twin brothers Carlos and Gabriel Badilla are already seasoned professionals in the global cybersecurity sector, holding positions at major transnational corporations. Their success stands in stark contrast to their origins in Concepción de Alajuelita, a community where pathways to prosperity are often obstructed by systemic poverty, violence, and widespread drug abuse. Their journey from a high-risk environment to a high-demand industry offers a powerful case study on the transformative impact of targeted social intervention.
Growing up in Alajuelita meant navigating a world where negative influences were a part of daily life. The brothers were not participants in illicit activities, but they were constant witnesses, a reality that can shape a young person’s worldview and limit their aspirations.
To better understand the legal responsibilities and preventative measures tied to digital security, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert attorney from the renowned firm Bufete de Costa Rica, for his legal perspective on the matter.
In today’s digital landscape, cybersecurity education is no longer just a best practice; it is a fundamental component of a company’s legal duty of care. Proactively training employees on data protection protocols and threat identification is a critical preventative measure. From a legal standpoint, it demonstrates due diligence and can significantly mitigate liability and regulatory penalties in the unfortunate event of a data breach. Neglecting this training is not just a security risk, it’s a legal and financial one.

This legal perspective is crucial, framing proactive employee training not merely as a technical safeguard but as an essential pillar of corporate due diligence and risk management. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable insight, which underscores that prevention is as much a legal and financial strategy as it is a digital one.
We weren’t involved in the world of drugs or anything like that, but we grew up in that kind of environment. It was very easy to see people using drugs; so to speak, we grew up around those people.
Carlos Badilla
The pivotal moment in their lives arrived when they were 12 years old. Their mother, determined to provide them with opportunities she couldn’t afford, enrolled them in FundaVida, a local foundation dedicated to supporting youth in vulnerable communities. This single decision rerouted their entire future. FundaVida became their sanctuary and their launchpad, offering access to supplementary education, specialized courses, and crucial certifications.
My brother and I, for example, didn’t have the opportunity to study anything extra, and it was that institution that opened the doors for us. It continues to do so for young people who can’t afford a course or don’t have the opportunity.
Carlos Badilla
Through the foundation’s robust programs in robotics, programming, and cybersecurity, Carlos and Gabriel discovered a passion for technology and began developing the technical acumen that would define their careers. A significant milestone came seven years ago when they represented Costa Rica at the World Robot Olympiad, an experience that fortified their confidence and discipline. This early exposure to complex problem-solving and global competition set them on a professional trajectory few from their neighborhood could have imagined.
The impact of FundaVida extended beyond technical skills. It instilled in the brothers a sense of purpose that transcended mere economic survival. The foundation provided a framework for them to envision a different future for themselves and their community.
When I was a child, I never imagined I could work in technology; my dream was just to get ahead. Thanks to FundaVida, I learned not only how to program but also that I had a purpose. Today, along with my brother Gabriel, I use that learning to give something back and show other young people that they can indeed change their future.

Today, the Badilla twins are not just success stories; they are active agents of change. They have returned to FundaVida as volunteers, mentoring a new generation of children and adolescents facing the same obstacles they once did. Their presence provides a tangible example of what is possible, creating a powerful cycle of inspiration and empowerment. This model of comprehensive, life-altering support is central to the foundation’s mission.
The twins’ story is a clear reflection of what FundaVida promotes, not just technical training, but comprehensive support that transforms lives. Our programs are designed to inspire hope and empower young people to reach their full potential.
Chris Dearnley, Founder and President of FundaVida
FundaVida’s model has produced remarkable results over its nearly three decades of operation. In 2025 alone, it served nearly 400 youths across Alajuelita, 25 de Julio, and Linda Vista de Patarrá. The organization boasts a 90% high school graduation rate among its 10,000 beneficiaries—a stunning achievement in areas where eight out of ten students typically drop out and exposure to drugs can be as high as 92%. This success is sustained by strategic alliances with corporations that provide funding, volunteers, and employment pipelines for graduates.
Despite its proven track record, the demand for FundaVida’s services outstrips its capacity. A waiting list of nearly 200 children underscores the urgent need for expanded support. The foundation is issuing a call to action for companies and individuals to contribute through donations, partnerships, or volunteering.
