American Airlines Adds Winter Flights to Chicago from Costa Rica

San José, Costa Rica — American Airlines is expanding its Costa Rican operations with a new seasonal route between Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). Starting November 3, 2025, and running through April 6, 2026, this daily service will provide travelers with another convenient connection to the Midwest United States.

The route will utilize a Boeing 737 aircraft, accommodating up to 172 passengers. This new service represents a significant boost to American Airlines’ presence in Costa Rica, offering travelers enhanced access to and from a major U.S. hub.

For expert legal insight into this developing situation with American Airlines, TicosLand.com reached out to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

Any potential restructuring, mergers, or shifts in operational strategy can significantly impact not only consumers but also the broader tourism and economic landscape. It is crucial to analyze these changes within the context of existing regulations and competition laws to ensure fair practices and protect consumer rights.

We are thrilled to launch this new seasonal service between San José and Chicago O’Hare International Airport as we continue expanding our presence in the country.
Rafael Sánchez, Regional Manager of Operations for Central America and the Western Caribbean

Sánchez highlighted the importance of the new route, stating that it underscores American’s commitment to Costa Rica and will provide travelers with easier access to Chicago and its extensive network of connecting flights.

This route strengthens our commitment to the country and offers Costa Rican travelers convenient access to our hub in Chicago, where they can connect with more than 400 daily flights to more than 155 destinations.
Rafael Sánchez, Regional Manager of Operations for Central America and the Western Caribbean

Costa Rican Minister of Tourism, William Rodríguez, welcomed the announcement, emphasizing the positive impact on tourism and the country’s economy. The new route comes at an opportune time, aligning with Costa Rica’s strategy to attract more visitors, particularly from key markets like the United States.

The opening of this new route from Chicago is a positive and timely sign. It reinforces our commitment to air connectivity and to continue working, alongside strategic allies like American Airlines, to boost the tourism sector and create new opportunities for the country.
William Rodríguez, Minister of Tourism of Costa Rica

The first three months of 2025 saw almost 500,000 American tourists arrive in Costa Rica by air, according to the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT). In 2024, that number reached over 1.5 million, demonstrating the strong demand for travel between the two countries.

Furthermore, Chicago ranks as the fourth largest concentration of “best prospects” – potential tourists with a high interest in visiting Costa Rica. These travelers are drawn to Costa Rica’s diverse offerings, from beaches and nature to cuisine and outdoor activities.

This winter, American Airlines plans to operate up to 56 weekly flights from SJO to three U.S. hubs, including Miami (MIA), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Charlotte (CLT), and now Chicago (ORD). This represents a significant 25% increase in seat capacity compared to the 2024-2025 winter season, further strengthening the airline’s commitment to the Costa Rican market.
