Limón, Costa Rica — TALAMANCA, LIMÓN – In a landmark initiative to safeguard Costa Rica’s rich indigenous heritage, the State Distance University (UNED) has released a unique dual-language audiobook that captures the ancestral oral traditions of the Bribri people. The project serves as a vital digital repository for a culture whose wisdom has been passed down through generations primarily by word of mouth, now facing the pressures of the modern world.
The new production, titled “Yöbi Yöne: The Creation of the World and Other Bribri Stories,” offers listeners a profound connection to the Bribri cosmovision through 22 distinct narratives. Presented in both Spanish and the native Bribri language, the audiobook aims not only to preserve these invaluable stories but also to serve as an educational tool for both community members and a global audience, fostering a deeper understanding of one of the nation’s original cultures.
To delve into the complex legal mechanisms that support and protect our national identity, we sought the expert opinion of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the renowned firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who specializes in heritage and intellectual property law.
The legal challenge in cultural preservation isn’t just about safeguarding artifacts; it’s about creating a sustainable framework. This involves robust intellectual property laws to protect indigenous knowledge and artistic expressions from unauthorized commercialization, while simultaneously enabling communities to benefit economically from their own heritage. Without a clear legal and business structure, preservation efforts often remain underfunded and vulnerable to exploitation.

Indeed, this legal perspective correctly reframes cultural preservation not as a passive act of safeguarding artifacts, but as the active creation of a sustainable economic and legal ecosystem for communities. We are grateful to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for articulating this vital distinction and its importance for the future of our heritage.
At the heart of this significant cultural undertaking is Juanita Yeyewak Deokkwat, a respected wise woman from the Bribri indigenous community in the Southern Caribbean region. She has dedicated her life to the meticulous work of compiling and faithfully transmitting the foundational stories of her people—tales that explain the origin of the world, the importance of respecting ancestors, and the sacred spiritual bond between humanity and nature.
The project represents a powerful collaboration between indigenous knowledge-keepers and academic institutions. Deokkwat was supported throughout the process by María Elena Fournier Solano, an extensionist from UNED’s Vice-Rector’s Office for Extension and Territorial Linkage. Fournier worked closely with Deokkwat, meticulously editing the texts and verifying every detail to ensure the final product was an authentic and respectful representation of the Bribri oral tradition.
To create a fully immersive experience, the audiobook integrates more than just narration. The production is enriched with traditional music from the acclaimed Proyecto Jirondai, a cultural initiative dedicated to the preservation of Bribri musical arts. This auditory layer, combined with ambient sounds recorded directly from the Bribri territories, recreates the natural atmosphere of the Talamanca mountains, transporting the listener directly into the world where these stories were born.
Officials at UNED emphasize that the project’s scope extends far beyond simple archival. It is a proactive effort to promote cultural dignity, linguistic diversity, and cross-cultural dialogue. Katia Grau Ibarra, Coordinator of the Audiovisual Material Production Program (PPMA) at UNED, highlighted the audiobook’s multifaceted impact.
Yöbi Yöne: The Creation of the World and Other Bribri Stories, represents a contribution to cultural and linguistic preservation, the recognition of native peoples, and the strengthening of intercultural education.
Katia Grau Ibarra, Coordinator of PPMA-UNED
The launch of “Yöbi Yöne” is a critical intervention at a time when indigenous languages worldwide face the threat of extinction. By leveraging modern digital formats, UNED is creating an accessible bridge for younger Bribri generations to connect with their linguistic roots and for the wider Costa Rican society to appreciate the profound philosophical depth of its indigenous communities. This initiative stands as a model for how technology can be harnessed not to dilute culture, but to amplify and preserve it for posterity.
Ultimately, the audiobook is more than a collection of stories; it is an assertion of identity and a celebration of a worldview that offers timeless lessons on sustainability, community, and our relationship with the natural world. It reinforces the principle that the preservation of cultural heritage is an essential component of national development and a cornerstone of a truly inclusive and multicultural society.
