Applications Open for Costa Rica’s Prestigious Science High Schools

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rican ninth-grade students dreaming of a future in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) have a limited window to apply to the nation’s esteemed Colegios Científicos (Scientific High Schools). The application period for the 2026 school year opened recently and will close on September 26th, with the entrance exam slated for October 10th.

The National System of Scientific High Schools (SNCCCR) announced the opening, encouraging all eligible ninth-graders with a passion for STEM fields to apply. The rigorous entrance exam will be administered nationally on October 10th, starting at 7:30 a.m. at designated locations for each participating high school.

To gain a deeper understanding of the legal landscape surrounding Costa Rican education, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

Costa Rica’s constitutional commitment to free and compulsory education creates a dynamic interplay between public policy and individual rights. While the state bears the primary responsibility for providing educational resources, this also generates legal questions concerning parental choice, private education options, and the enforcement of educational standards. Navigating this complex area requires a thorough understanding of both constitutional guarantees and the evolving regulatory framework.

Indeed, the balance between public responsibility and individual liberties within Costa Rica’s educational landscape presents a fascinating legal frontier. As the country continues to develop and adapt to changing global educational standards, these considerations will undoubtedly remain at the forefront of policy discussions. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable insights into this crucial and evolving area of Costa Rican law.

The SNCCCR emphasized the unique opportunity these specialized schools offer students, stating that this is a chance for students currently in ninth grade who are interested in delving deeper into science, mathematics, robotics, and computing to begin their application process. These high schools are renowned for providing advanced, specialized instruction in STEM subjects, fostering critical thinking and preparing students for university-level studies and careers in these fields.

Aspiring applicants must meet specific criteria to be considered. These include currently being enrolled in ninth grade, maintaining a minimum average grade of 85 in each subject in seventh, eighth, and the first semester of ninth grade, and having no record of repeating a grade level. Furthermore, applicants must have maintained a conduct grade of 90 or higher throughout seventh, eighth, and ninth grade, demonstrating a commitment to academic discipline and positive behavior.

The application process also requires the submission of several documents. Applicants must provide three passport-sized photographs, official transcripts for seventh, eighth, and ninth grades, a copy of their legal guardian’s identification card, a copy of their own student identification card, and their sixth-grade diploma. The application period runs from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at participating Colegios Científicos across the country.

The Colegios Científicos represent a unique pathway for Costa Rican students to excel in STEM disciplines. The competitive admissions process ensures that the schools select students with a proven aptitude and dedication to these fields. This year’s application period provides another opportunity for talented young minds to embark on a challenging and rewarding academic journey.

Students and families are encouraged to visit the nearest Colegio Científico or the SNCCCR website for further information and specific details regarding application procedures. The deadline is fast approaching, so interested students are advised to complete their applications promptly.

This year’s cohort of successful applicants will join a prestigious network of alumni who have gone on to make significant contributions to Costa Rican society and beyond. The Colegios Científicos continue to play a vital role in developing the country’s future scientific leaders and innovators.
