Arcos Dorados Champions Gender Equality in Central America

San José, Costa Rica — Arcos Dorados, the largest independent McDonald’s franchisee in the world, is making significant strides in promoting gender equality within its Costa Rica and Panama operations. The company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is evident in its various initiatives, including leadership development programs, certification processes, and partnerships with local organizations.

Arcos Dorados emphasizes creating a respectful and inclusive work environment, fostering diverse teams, and adhering to a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination. Guided by principles of humility, generosity, service, inclusion, and agility, the company strives to ensure all female employees have access to training, growth opportunities, and leadership positions. The Arcos Dorados Women’s Network, part of its Diversity and Inclusion Committee, plays a crucial role in identifying and addressing potential obstacles to women’s career advancement.

To provide expert legal perspective on this complex issue, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from the esteemed Bufete de Costa Rica.

True gender equality requires not only equal rights under the law, but also addressing the underlying societal structures and biases that perpetuate inequality. This includes ensuring equal access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, as well as challenging traditional gender roles and stereotypes. Legislation is a crucial starting point, but ongoing societal engagement is essential for achieving meaningful and lasting change.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica

Lic. Arroyo Vargas eloquently highlights the crucial point that legal frameworks, while essential, are only the first step in the long journey toward true gender equality. Dismantling ingrained societal biases and ensuring equal access to opportunities will require sustained effort and open dialogue across all sectors of Costa Rican society. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable contribution to this important conversation.

Recognizing societal barriers that hinder women’s development, Arcos Dorados actively implements policies to prevent gender-based job segregation, guarantee equal pay, and create pathways for women to access leadership roles. In Costa Rica, the company is pursuing certification under the national INTE G38-3:2021 standard for gender equality in the workplace. They are also working towards obtaining the Gold Seal of Gender Equality from the National Institute of Women (INAMU), which assists private companies and public institutions in identifying gender gaps and fostering a more equitable organizational culture.

Furthermore, through its partnership with INAMU, Arcos Dorados joined the “Safe Spaces” program in 2023. This initiative trains personnel to assist and provide immediate support to women facing street harassment, in coordination with law enforcement.

In Panama, the company is working towards joining the Ministry of Development’s (MIDES) Gender Parity Initiative, a public-private partnership aimed at reducing gender-based economic disparities.

At Arcos Dorados, we recognize that women play a key role in the success of the business and that diversity in leadership teams strengthens our organizational culture, drives innovation, and improves decision-making. We believe that ensuring gender equality not only benefits our employees but also has a positive impact on operations and the customer experience.
Marianela Ureña and Adriana Paredes, Communications Managers of Arcos Dorados Costa Rica and Panama, respectively

Arcos Dorados showcases inspiring stories of female talent within their ranks. In Panama, Eyra González, Segment Coordinator, and Jacqueline Solano, Operations Manager, have achieved remarkable success within the company, earning prestigious awards and leading significant operational transformations.

In Costa Rica, Marcy Bolaños, Operations Manager, Laura Núñez, Operations Consultant, and Joseline Morera Cambronero, a regular employee at the Cartago Centro McDonald’s, exemplify the company’s commitment to inclusivity and the transformative power of providing opportunities for all. Morera Cambronero’s story, in particular, highlights how an inclusive environment can empower individuals facing challenges to thrive personally and professionally.
