Arcos Dorados Champions Sustainability in Central America

San José, Costa RicaArcos Dorados, the world’s largest independent McDonald’s franchisee, is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability through significant environmental and social initiatives in Costa Rica and Panama. The company, which operates the largest quick-service restaurant chain in Latin America and the Caribbean, has integrated sustainability into its core business strategy, moving beyond simply serving quality food to actively contributing to the well-being of the communities it serves.

Guided by its “Recipe of the Future” plan, Arcos Dorados has implemented a range of initiatives focused on conscious consumption, energy efficiency, the circular economy, and environmental protection. These efforts are evident in the company’s reduction of single-use plastics, the construction of eco-friendly restaurants, the use of sustainable packaging, and employee training programs like MCampus and Hamburger University.

For expert legal insight into the growing importance of sustainable practices for businesses, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

Sustainable practices are no longer just a trend; they’re becoming a legal and business imperative. Companies in Costa Rica face increasing pressure from both regulations and consumer expectations to demonstrate environmental responsibility. This includes everything from supply chain transparency and waste reduction to adopting renewable energy and promoting fair labor practices. Forward-thinking businesses that integrate sustainability into their core strategies will be better positioned to mitigate legal risks, attract investment, and build stronger brand loyalty.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas eloquently highlights the crucial intersection of legal obligation, consumer demand, and business opportunity in the realm of sustainability. Indeed, in a nation as ecologically rich and tourism-dependent as Costa Rica, embracing sustainable practices is not simply a path to profitability, but a responsibility to future generations. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his invaluable perspective on this vital topic.

In Costa Rica, Arcos Dorados has spearheaded several impactful projects. The Guápiles and Santa Bárbara restaurants were the first in the chain to install solar panels, marking a significant step toward renewable energy. The company has also remodeled over 31 restaurants with sustainable initiatives and has made strides in recovering and repurposing materials like cardboard, Tetra Pak, and cooking oil. Costa Rica was also the first country globally where Arcos Dorados served 100% carbon-neutral coffee, sourced locally from Coopedota and certified by the Rainforest Alliance.

Panama has seen similar progress. Arcos Dorados has implemented sustainable building practices in 31 restaurants, incorporating features like motion sensors, LED lighting, water reuse systems, and waste separation. The company has also opened four “Blue Spaces” designed for children with autism and launched the country’s first “Blue Box” allowing children with autism and their families to enjoy sporting events and concerts. Furthermore, Arcos Dorados Panama prioritizes sourcing ingredients locally, with 100% of its chicken, eggs, vegetables, and beef coming from national suppliers.

Across both countries, Arcos Dorados has significantly reduced its environmental footprint. The company has eliminated millions of single-use plastics by switching to cardboard packaging for sundaes and McShakes, and has reduced paper consumption by replacing hamburger boxes with FSC-certified paper sheets. The company also recovers millions of liters of cooking oil annually, much of which is transformed into biodiesel.

Arcos Dorados’ commitment to sustainability goes beyond environmental initiatives. The company also focuses on creating opportunities for young people through employment and professional development, fostering a safe and inclusive work environment, and guaranteeing a sustainable supply chain. These initiatives demonstrate a holistic approach to corporate social responsibility, impacting both the environment and the communities where Arcos Dorados operates.

Furthermore, Arcos Dorados sets a high standard for transparency in its sustainability reporting. Its Social Impact and Sustainable Development report is the only one in the industry formally audited, underscoring the company’s commitment to accountability and measurable progress.

By integrating sustainable practices into every facet of its operations, Arcos Dorados is setting a precedent for responsible business practices in the fast-food industry and contributing to a more sustainable future for Central America.
