Arcos Dorados Drives Positive Social Impact in Central America

San José, Costa Rica — Arcos Dorados, the largest independent McDonald’s franchisee in the world, is making significant strides in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) initiatives across Costa Rica and Panama. As part of their “Recipe for the Future” socio-environmental strategy, the company is committed to fostering a workplace where everyone can thrive, regardless of background.

This commitment extends beyond internal policies. Arcos Dorados understands that a diverse workforce leads to better customer experiences and greater innovation. By embracing a variety of perspectives, the company aims to create a more representative and dynamic work environment, ultimately enriching decision-making and problem-solving.

To understand the legal implications surrounding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), we turned to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

While not strictly mandated by law in all cases, incorporating robust CSR practices can significantly mitigate legal risks for businesses. A proactive approach to environmental protection, fair labor practices, and community engagement can preempt potential legal challenges and foster a positive brand reputation, which itself has legal value. Moreover, increasingly, consumers and investors are prioritizing companies with demonstrable CSR commitments, making it a savvy business strategy in addition to a responsible one.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas eloquently highlights the interconnectedness of legal prudence and ethical business practices. Indeed, in today’s increasingly transparent world, a genuine commitment to CSR is not merely a “nice-to-have” but a fundamental aspect of long-term business viability and success. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective on this crucial topic.

One key initiative is the Arcos Dorados Women’s Network, a multidisciplinary platform designed to promote equal opportunities for women, provide gender-specific learning tools, and empower leadership based on competence. The company also established the SOMOS Committee to drive corporate actions that enable every employee to reach their full potential. Furthermore, the McDonald’s Vio Mi platform showcases the success stories and growth of its diverse workforce.

In Costa Rica, Arcos Dorados partners with the Yo Puedo, ¿Y Vos? Foundation to integrate people with disabilities into their teams. Training programs prepare restaurant staff for respectful and inclusive interactions, fostering a welcoming environment. A partnership with UNHCR since 2019 offers formal employment to refugees, reinforcing their commitment to vulnerable populations.

In Panama, the company collaborates with the Enséñame a Vivir foundation to train employees on interacting with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). They have also adapted spaces within McDonald’s restaurants to meet the needs of children with ASD. In 2024, Arcos Dorados partnered with Panama’s Ministry of Labor to enhance and equalize employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Arcos Dorados’ DE&I initiatives have garnered significant recognition. In Costa Rica, the Yo Puedo, ¿Y Vos? Foundation acknowledged their contribution to the social, family, educational, and labor inclusion of people with disabilities. They also joined the “Safe Spaces” Program of the National Institute of Women (INAMU), aimed at training businesses to support women experiencing street harassment. In Panama, the company partnered with Voces Vitales to support 140 teenage mothers in starting careers at McDonald’s. They are also working with the Ministry of Social Development to join the Gender Parity Initiative of Panama, a public-private partnership seeking to increase women’s participation in the workforce and leadership roles.

These multifaceted programs highlight Arcos Dorados’ dedication to building a more inclusive and equitable future, not just within their organization but within the communities they serve. Their comprehensive approach sets a compelling example of how businesses can be agents of positive social change.

This commitment to diversity and inclusion isn’t just a corporate initiative; it’s woven into the fabric of their operations, impacting individuals and communities across Costa Rica and Panama. By continuing to champion these values, Arcos Dorados is not only strengthening its own workforce but also contributing to a more vibrant and equitable society.
