Avianca Expands Costa Rica Flight Network

Avianca Expands Costa Rica Flight Network

San José, Costa Rica — Avianca has launched new direct flights connecting San José, Costa Rica with Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico, marking a significant expansion of the airline’s presence in the region. These routes promise increased tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between Costa Rica and key destinations in the United States and the Caribbean.

Starting April 1, 2025, Avianca commenced operations with three weekly flights between Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan. This route offers 1,080 seats per week, enhancing accessibility for Costa Ricans traveling to Puerto Rico and strengthening ties between the two destinations. Avianca has also initiated daily service between San José and Miami International Airport (MIA), offering 2,520 seats weekly. This daily connection caters to the increasing demand for travel between Costa Rica and South Florida.

Avianca’s recent developments raise important questions regarding airline regulations and competition within the Costa Rican market. The impact on consumers, particularly concerning ticket prices and route availability, warrants close scrutiny. Furthermore, any potential mergers, acquisitions, or restructuring efforts by Avianca will likely face rigorous legal review by Costa Rican authorities to ensure adherence to antitrust laws and consumer protection regulations.

These new routes come after a successful year for Avianca, with the airline boasting its most robust network and highest passenger numbers in its 105-year history. The expansion into the Costa Rican market reflects Avianca’s commitment to providing more direct routes and enhanced connectivity for its passengers.

After a successful 2024, in which we consolidated the strongest network in our history and transported the largest number of passengers in our 105 years, we are excited to continue expanding our direct route offerings in a key market like Costa Rica. Our goal is to continue bringing our travelers closer to the destinations they dream of.

Costa Rican Minister of Tourism, William Rodríguez, also welcomed the new routes, highlighting their importance for the country’s tourism sector.

These new direct routes strengthen Costa Rica’s connectivity in the Caribbean and the United States. The new connection between San José and San Juan, Puerto Rico will facilitate the arrival of Puerto Rican tourists. Likewise, the expansion to a daily flight between San José and Miami, with 3600 seats weekly, reinforces Costa Rica’s air connectivity with our main market.
William Rodríguez, Minister of Tourism

Avianca’s expansion extends beyond Costa Rica, with new direct routes from Medellín to Fort Lauderdale and from Bogotá to Tampa, further broadening its reach within the United States.

Tickets for the new routes are available for purchase through Avianca’s official channels, including avianca.com, the mobile app, physical points of sale, and travel agencies. With this strategic expansion, Avianca reinforces its dedication to providing efficient, flexible, and accessible travel options across the Americas.
