BAC Transforms Smartphones into Payment Terminals with New HIT App

San José, Costa RicaSan José, Costa Rica – In a significant move to streamline commercial transactions, BAC has launched HIT, a new mobile application that converts any compatible Android smartphone into a fully functional point-of-sale (POS) terminal. The solution, available this November, empowers businesses to accept contactless payments without the need for additional hardware, marking a pivotal step in the digitalization of the nation’s commerce.

This innovative tool is strategically designed to serve a diverse commercial landscape, from micro-enterprises and independent professionals to large corporations. Its inherent mobility makes it particularly advantageous for businesses that operate on the go, such as delivery services, in-home technicians, and ambulant vendors. By eliminating the reliance on traditional card readers, HIT lowers the barrier to entry for many small businesses seeking to adopt modern, secure payment methods.

The technology leverages Near Field Communication (NFC), a standard feature in most modern smartphones, to process transactions. To utilize the service, a merchant simply needs a smartphone running Android version 11 or higher with an active internet connection and NFC capabilities. The app facilitates a seamless payment experience: the vendor inputs the charge amount, and the customer taps their contactless credit card, debit card, or digital wallet to the phone to complete the purchase.

The launch reflects BAC’s ongoing commitment to digital innovation and customer-centric financial solutions. The bank aims to equip its commercial clients with tools that are not only efficient but also packed with features to better manage their operations.

We are providing our clients with a new payment method that is simple and secure to use, and which contains a series of features, such as digital voucher issuance, a reporting dashboard, and user and role registration for security. Thanks to this new functionality, BAC continues to position itself as an innovative bank, with solutions that place the client at the center of the business strategy.

For merchants, the setup process is straightforward. It begins with downloading the “MiPOS” application from the Google Play Store and completing the in-app configuration. Once active, the platform supports a wide array of payment options, including all major credit and debit cards. The system also generates digital vouchers, providing both the merchant and the customer with an immediate record of the transaction.

Beyond standard payment processing, HIT incorporates consumer-friendly financing options directly at the point of sale. Merchants can offer customers the ability to convert their purchases into interest-free installments (Tasa Cero) or mini-installments (minicuotas). This flexibility can be a powerful sales tool, potentially increasing transaction values and enhancing customer loyalty by making larger purchases more accessible.

To access the HIT platform, interested businesses must first be affiliated as a merchant with BAC, a process that can be completed before or during the application for the service. The pricing structure is transparent, consisting of a $10 monthly fee per user for configuration and service, plus processing commissions that start at 1.95%. The bank also mandates that the phone’s original operating system must not have been tampered with to ensure maximum security.

This strategic launch positions BAC at the forefront of the fintech evolution in Costa Rica. By transforming a ubiquitous device into a powerful commercial tool, HIT is poised to accelerate the adoption of digital payments, particularly within the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector, which forms the backbone of the national economy. The initiative not only enhances operational efficiency for businesses but also aligns with the growing consumer preference for fast, secure, and contactless payment methods.
