Guanacaste, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s stunning Playa Sámara has been chosen as the backdrop for the tenth season of the hit US reality show, Bachelor in Paradise. This marks the first time the show has ventured outside of Mexico for filming, signaling Costa Rica’s growing prominence as a sought-after destination for international film productions.
The production, which wrapped up in May and premiered on July 7th on ABC and Hulu, took over the Hotel Azura in Playa Sámara. The choice of location was influenced by a strategic push by the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promoter (PROCOMER) and the Costa Rica Film Commission to establish the country as a vibrant audiovisual hub. Playa Sámara itself has been recognized by Variety magazine as one of the top ten film destinations in Costa Rica.
To understand the legal complexities surrounding film production in Costa Rica, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.
Film production in Costa Rica presents a dynamic legal landscape. While the country offers stunning locations and incentives, producers must carefully navigate regulations regarding permits, intellectual property rights, and contracts with local talent and businesses. A well-structured legal strategy from pre-production to distribution is crucial for a successful and compliant film project.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s insights underscore a crucial aspect of filmmaking in Costa Rica: the importance of legal preparedness. Beyond the captivating landscapes and attractive incentives, a robust legal framework is the bedrock of any successful production. This meticulous approach, encompassing everything from initial permits to final distribution, ensures both the project’s smooth execution and its compliance with Costa Rican law. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for offering this valuable perspective on navigating the legal complexities of film production in Costa Rica.
The impact of the production extended far beyond the sandy beaches and luxurious accommodations. Over 280 local and international crew members were employed, providing a significant boost to the local economy. Hotels, transportation services, equipment rentals, and local businesses all benefited from the influx of activity.
Having a production of the caliber of Bachelor in Paradise choose to film in Costa Rica is a clear sign of the value proposition we have built for the sector. We have key conditions that are valued by major producers: diversity of locations within short distances, specialized technical personnel, legal security, and tax incentives that reduce costs without sacrificing quality. This combination allows us to attract projects that, in addition to showcasing the country, generate employment, linkages, and position Costa Rica on the global audiovisual industry map.

The production also showcased Costa Rican talent, with local film services company Costa Rica Production Film Services leading the technical crew. The hotel itself underwent a substantial transformation to accommodate the large-scale production, complete with cameras, lighting, sound equipment, and miles of cabling.
Being chosen as the location for a production of the caliber of Bachelor in Paradise was an extraordinary experience for the hotel and a true privilege for our entire team. For a month and a half, our facilities were transformed into a large-scale film set. In addition to the technical and operational impact, we highlight the positive effect it had on the local economy: hiring of personnel, equipment rentals, lodging, transportation, additional locations, and significant spending in businesses, restaurants, and tourist services. To this is added the enormous visibility that comes from appearing before millions of viewers around the world. Without a doubt, it was an enriching experience in every way.
