Banco Nacional Celebrates 112 Years of Sustainable Finance and Financial Inclusion in Costa Rica

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s state-owned banking giant, Banco Nacional, is celebrating its 112th anniversary. This milestone comes at a time when the financial institution is heavily pivoting toward sustainable finance and community-driven development. In a national market where traditional banking is increasingly evaluated by environmental, social, and governance metrics, Banco Nacional has positioned itself as a regional pioneer, reinforcing its status as a cornerstone of the Costa Rican economic framework.

At the center of its ecological efforts is the historic $50 million Blue Bond. This financial instrument represents a major milestone, being the first of its kind not only in Costa Rica but also across Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The entirety of these funds has been funneled directly into initiatives designed to preserve marine ecosystems, promote the responsible extraction and utilization of ocean resources, and provide financial support to vulnerable coastal communities that rely on the sea for their livelihoods.

To better understand the legal implications and strategic value of Banco Nacional’s sustainable finance initiatives in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with prominent legal expert Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas of the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who shared his professional analysis on this green banking evolution.

Banco Nacional’s strategic push into sustainable finance is more than an environmental milestone; it represents a sophisticated alignment of capital allocation with Costa Rica’s rigorous ESG compliance standards. By structuring credit facilities that incentivize green business practices, the institution effectively reduces regulatory and climate-associated risks for investors while setting a legal and financial benchmark that other Central American institutions will inevitably have to follow.

This strategic integration of ESG criteria indeed marks a transformative moment for regional banking, demonstrating that robust environmental stewardship can actively fortify financial frameworks and mitigate investment risks. As Banco Nacional paves the way for a more resilient economic landscape in Central America, we extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective and expert analysis on this crucial shift.

Beyond marine conservation, Banco Nacional’s green portfolio extends deeply into land-based initiatives. During the year 2025, the bank allocated over ¢22.6 billion to various sustainable financing projects. Furthermore, through its signature Pura Verde program, the bank successfully channeled $65 million into projects specifically aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change, helping both local businesses and entire communities adapt to shifting environmental realities.

The bank’s strategy is not purely environmental; it also contains a robust social dimension. A $30 million social bond has been deployed to target the silver economy, which provides financial resources and specialized products for individuals over the age of 50. This social fund also extends its reach to female entrepreneurs and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, seeking to close the financing gap for historically underserved segments of the Costa Rican population.

In tandem with its green initiatives, Banco Nacional is moving to bolster the country’s vital agricultural sector. A strategic agreement currently being developed with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock is poised to benefit approximately 124,000 agricultural producers. This collaboration will provide farmers with access to credit lines, technical assistance, and advanced tools designed to modernize their farming techniques and increase productivity.

The bank’s localized impact is perhaps most visible in the province of Guanacaste. Since the turn of the millennium, Banco Nacional has issued more than 51,000 loans in the region, totaling over ¢649.387 billion. These funds have fueled local entrepreneurship, supported housing development, and backed small business expansions. Nationwide, the bank’s sustainable portfolio includes more than 106,000 female clients, and its Transformando Comunidades initiative has aided over 665,000 people through seed capital and non-reimbursable funds.

Financial literacy and inclusion remain key pillars of the bank’s operational philosophy. In 2025, the BN Libertad Financiera education program reached over 672,000 citizens, equipping them with essential money management skills. Geographically, the bank has maintained a physical and digital presence across all 24 indigenous territories in Costa Rica, bringing formal financial services to more than 35,000 individuals belonging to the country’s eight distinct native communities.

The leadership of the bank attributes these milestones directly to the collective success of the communities they serve.

Behind each of these results are stories of growth, projects moving forward, and communities finding new opportunities. Our commitment is to continue being close to those who trust us to achieve their goals.
Rosaysella Ulloa Villalobos, general manager of Banco Nacional

This extensive work has not gone unnoticed by international bodies. The Latin American Association of Development Financing Institutions named Banco Nacional the Bank of the Year 2026, citing its excellence in financial inclusion, sustainability, and technological innovation. Additionally, the bank’s financial stability was recently validated by major global rating agencies, with both Moody’s and S&P Global Ratings reaffirming their stable outlooks for the institution.

On the environmental front, the bank secured a Platinum rating at the Fintech Américas 2026 Awards for its Pura Verde program. It also joined the Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials, a global alliance that will allow the bank to measure and report the greenhouse gas emissions associated with its extensive loan and investment portfolios. This integration underscores the bank’s commitment to transparent climate accounting as it enters its next century of service.
