Brazilian SMEs Go Global Fueling Economic Growth

San José, Costa RicaSÃO PAULO, Brazil – A groundbreaking initiative aimed at the internationalization of Brazil’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has generated approximately $125 million in business since 2023. The program, spearheaded by the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), is successfully diversifying the country’s export markets, enhancing its global competitiveness, and providing a significant boost to the national economy.

The impressive figure stems from the ‘Exporta Mais Brasil’ (Export More Brazil) initiative, which has facilitated 39 business matchmaking events. These sessions have connected 1,220 Brazilian companies with 392 international buyers from 69 different countries, creating tangible opportunities for entrepreneurs who previously may have found global markets inaccessible.

To better understand the legal and commercial implications of Brazil’s current export landscape, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert in international trade and corporate law at the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Brazil’s export strategy is at a pivotal juncture. While its agricultural and mineral commodities remain global powerhouses, the real challenge lies in diversifying into higher-value goods. Success will hinge on navigating complex international trade agreements, such as the EU-Mercosur deal, while simultaneously addressing domestic regulatory hurdles and logistical bottlenecks. For foreign investors and trading partners, this presents both significant opportunity and a clear need for rigorous due diligence to mitigate compliance risks.

This analysis expertly underscores the critical balancing act Brazil faces—leveraging its current commodity strength to fuel diversification while navigating the intricate web of global trade policy and domestic reform. We sincerely thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for lending his valuable perspective to this important discussion.

The program is fundamentally changing the landscape of Brazilian trade, proving that international success is not reserved for large corporations. Officials emphasize that the initiative is about creating concrete pathways to global commerce for businesses of all sizes across the nation.

Exporta Mais Brasil shows that internationalizing is not a privilege of large companies. We are building real business opportunities for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs from all regions of the country.
Jorge Viana, President of ApexBrasil

The momentum has continued strongly into the current year. Between January and early September, the program organized eleven distinct encounters that are projected to generate over $21 million in exports, both in immediate sales and contracts for the coming months. This sustained success highlights the strategic value and effective execution of the initiative.

Beyond the impressive revenue figures, the program offers a unique strategic advantage. It allows Brazilian SMEs, many of which are led by women, to engage directly with international buyers without the prohibitive cost and logistical challenges of traveling abroad. This model levels the playing field and accelerates the growth of promising local businesses.

The great value of Exporta Mais Brasil is allowing SMEs, many led by women, to connect directly with international buyers, without needing to leave the country. Everything is organized strategically, with negotiation agendas prepared according to the participants’ profiles.
Ana Repezza, Director of Business at ApexBrasil

To maximize its impact, ApexBrasil has adopted a market segmentation strategy, hosting thematic editions of the program focused on specific industries. These have included targeted events for specialty coffees, food and beverages, agricultural machinery, fresh fruits, and fashion. An edition in early September dedicated to industrialized foods and beverages connected 60 Brazilian firms with 12 buyers from markets including Mexico, Portugal, Chile, and South Africa, resulting in $1.5 million in immediate business deals.

For entrepreneurs like Bruno Silva, president of Sabor de Coco, a company that sustainably produces coconut oil and snacks, the event was a transformative opportunity. “We achieved very strong connections with the Chilean market and the Portuguese market,” Silva noted, underscoring the program’s effectiveness in forging valuable international partnerships.

A specialized offshoot, ‘Exporta Mais Amazônia,’ has been created to capitalize on the high-value potential of sustainable products from Brazil’s Amazon region. This sector, which already represents a $150 billion global market, remains an area of immense growth potential for Brazil. The first two editions of this Amazon-focused program generated around $16 million in business by promoting exports compatible with forest preservation.

The next edition, scheduled for late September in Rio Branco, will bring together over 60 local companies with 20 international buyers from nations like China, the United Kingdom, Russia, and India. This continued focus on niche, high-value sectors reflects a broader strategic goal.

Our goal is for the world to know the cultural and productive wealth housed in our forests.
Jorge Viana, President of ApexBrasil

As Viana concluded, the challenge for Brazil is not merely to access existing markets but to create new ones. Through strategic initiatives like Exporta Mais Brasil, the nation is empowering its entrepreneurs to showcase their unique products on the world stage, driving both economic prosperity and sustainable development.
