Cartaginés Secures Playoff Spot in Decisive Win Leaving Herediano’s Hopes in Tatters

San José, Costa RicaSan Isidro de El General – In a dramatic conclusion to Matchday 16, Club Sport Cartaginés delivered a commanding performance on the road, defeating a hopeful Pérez Zeledón 3-1. The victory not only cements their position in the upcoming playoff stage but also delivers a catastrophic blow to the postseason aspirations of provincial rivals and national powerhouse, Club Sport Herediano.

The match, held Monday night in the Generaleñas region, was a high-stakes affair with significant implications for the league table. Cartaginés, known as the “Brumosos,” left no doubt about their intentions, launching an offensive blitz from the opening whistle that effectively sealed the outcome within the first ten minutes of play. Their focus and intensity were palpable, showcasing a team ready for the pressures of a championship run.

The scoring opened just five minutes into the contest. Following a well-executed set-piece, defender Everardo Rubio found the back of the net, silencing the home crowd and giving Cartaginés the early advantage. Before Pérez Zeledón could mount a response, the visitors struck again. A foul in the penalty area just three minutes later led to a penalty kick, which Bernal Alfaro calmly converted to double the lead to 2-0 at the eight-minute mark.

Staring down a two-goal deficit, Pérez Zeledón, who entered the match in fifth place with their own classification hopes on the line, struggled to find their rhythm. They finally broke through in the 35th minute when Panamanian forward Jorman Aguilar managed to score, injecting a dose of hope for a second-half comeback. The goal provided a lifeline and set the stage for a more contentious final 45 minutes.

The second half evolved into a dynamic, back-and-forth battle. Pérez Zeledón pushed forward in numbers, desperately seeking an equalizer. This aggressive posture, however, left them vulnerable at the back. Cartaginés expertly managed the game, absorbing pressure and using their speed to launch dangerous counter-attacks into the spaces vacated by the home side’s relentless offensive push.

The decisive moment came in the 70th minute. After a series of threatening plays, Cartaginés forward Jesús Bátiz scored the team’s third goal. The play was subjected to a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), which ultimately confirmed the goal, extinguishing any remaining embers of hope for Pérez Zeledón and solidifying the 3-1 final score.

With this crucial victory, Cartaginés climbs to third place in the standings with 27 points. More importantly, they are now mathematically out of reach for both Pérez Zeledón and Herediano, who remain tied at 20 points with only two matches, and a maximum of six points, left to play. The result has created a dire situation for Herediano, one of Costa Rica’s most decorated clubs, whose chances of making the playoffs are now vanishingly slim.

The only remaining path to qualification for both Pérez Zeledón and Herediano is for fourth-place Municipal Liberia, currently sitting comfortably at 26 points, to suffer a complete collapse in their final two games while they themselves win both of theirs. This scenario places the fate of the “Florenses” almost entirely out of their own hands, a stunning development that could see one of the league’s giants miss out on the title fight entirely.
