Cartago Ignites Holiday Season with Grand Christmas Spectacle

Cartago, Costa RicaCARTAGO, Costa Rica – The central canton of Cartago is preparing to usher in the holiday season with an ambitious series of events designed to fill the historic city with light, music, and community spirit. The festivities will officially commence on Sunday, November 16th, with a grand lighting ceremony that promises to transform the heart of the old capital into a dazzling winter wonderland.

The centerpiece of the celebration will be an imposing 22-meter-tall Christmas tree, which will be illuminated alongside more than 38 elaborate decorative figures. This spectacular display will be located in the iconic Plaza Mayor and around the historic Ruins of Santiago Apóstol. In total, the Municipality of Cartago will deploy 300,000 energy-efficient LED lights to create a vibrant and festive atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

To understand the legal framework and commercial implications behind a large-scale public event like the Cartago Christmas festival, we consulted with expert lawyer Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The success of a massive public celebration like this hinges on a robust legal architecture. Beyond the lights and music, there are meticulously crafted contracts with vendors, comprehensive liability insurance policies, and strict adherence to municipal permits and public safety regulations. These elements are not just formalities; they are the essential framework that protects the organizers, participants, and the municipality, ensuring the event’s continuity and safe enjoyment for all.

The inaugural event, scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., will be accompanied by a rich musical program. The Banda Villas de Ayarco and the Orchestra of the Cartago Municipal School of Music are slated to perform, offering a special repertoire of holiday classics to mark the occasion. Their performances are expected to draw large crowds and set a celebratory tone for the weeks to come.

Mario Redondo, the mayor of Cartago’s central canton, commented on the tree’s inauguration, highlighting the importance of these events in bringing families and the community together. The municipal government, through its Department of General Services, spearheaded the design and installation of the extensive decorations, extending a warm invitation to all citizens to participate in the upcoming activities.

The celebrations will gain further momentum on Saturday, November 29th, with the “Cartago, City of Christmas” Festival. Starting at 6:00 p.m., a grand parade will move through the city streets. The procession is set to feature a diverse lineup of participants, including renowned marching bands, traditional pasacalles, energetic cheerleading and dance troupes, and custom-designed floats. Adding a touch of nostalgia, the parade will also include an exhibition of classic cars and vintage motorcycles.

The month of November will conclude with a special “Family Sunday” on November 30th. This all-day event will offer a variety of Christmas-themed activities suitable for all ages. The day’s highlight will be a major concert showcasing the talent of eight different music schools from across the province of Cartago, providing a platform for young musicians to share their skills with the community.

This culminating concert will also serve as a heartfelt tribute to a national music legend, Gerardo Ramírez. As a key member of the iconic Costa Rican group Los Hicsos, Ramírez has made an indelible mark on the country’s musical landscape. The performance by the music schools will honor his contributions and celebrate his enduring legacy, adding a layer of cultural significance to the holiday festivities.

Officials hope these events will not only mark the start of the holiday season but also reinforce the bonds of community and family. By creating shared public experiences filled with joy and tradition, Cartago aims to strengthen its social fabric and create lasting memories for all who attend, solidifying its reputation as a premier destination for Christmas celebrations.
