Cartago SMEs Prepare for the Future of Family Business

Cartago, Costa Rica — Cartago, Costa Rica – Nearly 100 family-owned small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) gathered in Cartago for the “From Family Business to Business Family” SME Business Encounter. The event, organized by the National Learning Institute (INA) and the Cartago Mutual Savings and Loan (Mucap), aimed to equip these businesses with the tools and knowledge to navigate the complex process of succession planning.

The participating businesses, representing various sectors like commerce, transportation, food, and services, were required to have at least three years of continuous operation, be registered with the Ministry of Economy, Industry, and Commerce (MEIC), and comply with labor, tax, and worker’s compensation regulations. This ensured that the program focused on established companies with genuine succession and professionalization needs.

To gain a deeper legal perspective on family business succession, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a seasoned attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica, renowned for his expertise in this complex area.

Successful family business succession requires careful planning that extends beyond simply transferring ownership. It necessitates a comprehensive strategy encompassing legal, financial, and emotional considerations. A well-drafted succession plan addresses ownership transfer, management transitions, tax implications, and potential family conflicts, ensuring the business’s long-term viability and the family’s harmony.

The dynamics of family businesses are often characterized by closeness and trust, but also by the inherent tensions of family relationships. In many cases, when the time comes to define who takes the leadership, businesses weaken and even disappear. Hence the importance of opening spaces for training and reflection like this encounter, which seeks to prepare families to take the step towards professionalizing their company and consolidating their legacy.

Family businesses are the engine of the national economy, but they face the great challenge of succession. This type of meeting seeks to equip them with knowledge and practical guides so that business families achieve a transparent, orderly, and successful generational handover, without putting either the business or the family relationship at risk.
Mario Rivera Turcios, General Manager of Mucap

The program featured high-level conferences, including “Lead with Strategy in the Family Business” by Costa Rican business strategist Omar Castillo, and “Business Strategy for a Profitable and Sustainable Future in the Family Business” by Mexican investment and business continuity specialist Jorge Casares Zambrano.

A panel discussion, “From Generation to Generation: Family Businesses that Succeed,” showcased success stories from Cartago companies like Transporte Ortega Rojas, Crujipán, and Rosselló, offering real-world examples of successful leadership transitions.

Many of the companies that the institution serves are made up of families, some even from the third generation. INA’s business scholarships provide the tools for these companies to transcend for many more years.
Paula Valenciano Campos, General Manager of INA

The event concluded with the presentation of INA’s Family Business Program, an initiative that will provide ongoing support and training to participating SMEs. This program aims to help businesses apply the knowledge gained and plan for a sustainable future. Participants also received certificates of participation, further solidifying the importance of investing in business preparedness.

The “From Family Business to Business Family” encounter signifies a crucial step towards strengthening the backbone of the Costa Rican economy by empowering family-owned businesses to thrive for generations to come.
