Authorities raided three properties and arrested six individuals allegedly involved in the illegal siphoning, storage, and distribution of state-owned fuel.

The anonymous caller alerted authorities to a criminal group that had established an illegal tap directly onto the state-run pipeline. Investigators discovered a complex and perilous system designed to steal large quantities of fuel. The criminal enterprise utilized a high-pressure hose stretching approximately 500 meters from the illegal pipeline connection to a secret warehouse used for storage. The scale and audacity of the setup were alarming, posing a substantial threat to public safety and the local environment.
The high-pressure hose was not only long but also dangerously routed, traversing a nearby river and several neighboring properties. Officials confirmed that this arrangement created a high-risk scenario for a potential rupture, which could have led to a catastrophic explosion or severe contamination of the local water supply. The immediate danger to the community was a primary concern for the authorities conducting the raid.
Upon receiving and validating the initial tip, Recope’s security team immediately referred the case to the OIJ’s Limón delegation. This included storage tanks, barrels, pressure gauges, and the 500-meter high-pressure hose, itself valued at approximately ₡2.5 million (around $4,700 USD). A vehicle used by the group was also impounded.
All six detainees have been handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and are currently being held in OIJ cells in Limón. They are awaiting a hearing where prosecutors will request precautionary measures.
