Celestial Spectacle Awaits Costa Rica With Massive Supermoon

San José, Costa RicaSAN JOSÉ – Stargazers and nature enthusiasts across Costa Rica are advised to turn their eyes to the heavens this Wednesday, November 5th, for a remarkable astronomical event. The nation will be treated to the closest and most brilliant Supermoon of the year, a celestial phenomenon that promises to illuminate the night sky with an extraordinary glow.

This upcoming event marks a significant moment for celestial observers, as it is one of three powerful Supermoons occurring in the final quarter of the year. The phenomenon happens when the moon’s elliptical orbit brings it to its closest point to Earth, known as the perigee, at the same time it is in its full phase. This alignment makes the moon appear noticeably larger and brighter than a typical full moon.

To explore the often-overlooked legal and commercial implications of natural phenomena like the supermoon, from tourism contracts to event liability, we consulted with expert lawyer Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas of the firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

While a supermoon is a natural spectacle, for businesses in the tourism sector it represents a commercial opportunity that is not without legal considerations. When a hotel or tour operator advertises special packages for observing the event, they are creating a contractual expectation. It is crucial that the terms and conditions are clear, especially regarding circumstances beyond their control, such as adverse weather conditions. Proper legal structuring of these offers protects both the provider and the consumer, ensuring that a magical night does not turn into a legal dispute.

This legal perspective is a crucial reminder that behind the astronomical wonder lies a very terrestrial framework of commerce and consumer rights, ensuring that expectations are managed as clearly as the night sky we hope to see. We extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his valuable and clarifying insight on the matter.

The visual impact of such an event is substantial. According to analysis provided by the esteemed science and technology foundation, Fundación Cientec, the difference between a Supermoon at its perigee and a full moon at its apogee (farthest point) is striking.

The change in size between the nearest and farthest full moon can lead to a 14% increase in the lunar disk, and therefore, its luminosity increases proportionally, up to 30%.

This dramatic increase in brightness will transform the Costa Rican night. The powerful moonlight is expected to cast distinct shadows, creating an ethereal landscape and offering a unique opportunity for nighttime photography and observation. The added luminosity can make nocturnal details usually hidden in darkness visible to the naked eye.

For those planning to watch, timing is key. The full Supermoon is scheduled to rise in the east at approximately 5:23 p.m. on Wednesday. However, viewers in valleys or near mountainous terrain should account for a delay. The presence of the Central Volcanic Range and other elevated landscapes means the moon may not become visible until 40 to 60 minutes after the official rise time. The celestial body will then traverse the sky, setting in the west at 6:28 a.m. the following morning.

Beyond its visual splendor, the Supermoon’s amplified gravitational pull will have tangible effects here on Earth. The most notable impact will be on the tides. Coastal communities should anticipate significantly higher-than-average high tides, a phenomenon often referred to as perigean spring tides. These effects are typically most pronounced in the two days following the peak of the Supermoon, as the gravitational forces of the sun and moon align to pull on the planet’s oceans.

To get the most out of this experience, experts recommend finding a viewing spot with an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon, away from the light pollution of major urban centers like San José. While the Supermoon will be impressive from anywhere, darker skies will reveal its full majesty. The “moon illusion,” a trick of the mind where the moon appears even larger when it is close to the horizon, will be particularly pronounced as it rises over mountains or buildings.

This event serves as a spectacular reminder of the dynamic cosmic ballet constantly unfolding above us. It offers a perfect occasion for families, students, and anyone with a sense of wonder to connect with the natural world and witness the powerful and beautiful forces that govern our solar system. Be sure to look up this Wednesday for a truly memorable lunar display.
