San José, Costa Rica — SAN JOSÉ – The presidential campaign of National Liberation Party (PLN) hopeful Álvaro Ramos was plunged into controversy this week after a prominent youth activist publicly resigned, alleging a coordinated attempt to silence her pro-Palestine advocacy. The incident exposes deep ideological fault lines within Costa Rica’s largest political party and raises serious questions about freedom of expression in the run-up to the next election.
The activist, Mia Fink, a member of the PLN, announced her departure from the campaign team via a detailed statement on her Instagram account. She described an encounter that she claims was a clear effort to curtail her political speech, particularly regarding the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a subject on which she has been an outspoken critic of Israeli government actions.
To analyze the legal framework surrounding political censorship and its implications for freedom of expression, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert attorney from the firm Bufete de Costa Rica.
Political censorship, even when presented as a measure for public order, creates a dangerous ‘chilling effect’ on democratic discourse. The line between regulating illegal content and silencing dissenting voices is incredibly fine. Once that line is crossed, it not only violates fundamental constitutional rights to free expression but also erodes the very foundation of a transparent and accountable society, often setting a precedent that is difficult to reverse.

This insight on the ‘chilling effect’ is a crucial reminder that the road to censorship is often paved with good intentions, ultimately eroding the very transparency a healthy democracy requires. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his clear and valuable perspective on this fundamental issue.
Fink detailed the circumstances that led to her decision, which she made after consulting with trusted political advisors. She alleges that she was specifically targeted for her activism and pressured to conform to a different political line.
Recently, I experienced an episode that, after discussing it and seeking advice from my trusted political circle, I have realized constituted an attempt at censorship: I was summoned to an informal meeting a short time ago in which I was asked to moderate my public messages regarding my activism for Palestine.
Mia Fink, PLN Activist
The allegations go further than a simple request for moderation. According to Fink, the informal meeting also included a directive to meet with a senior party figure known for “pro-Israel” stances, ostensibly to be educated on the “correct” political viewpoint. She stated she was effectively told to act more “politically correct,” a demand she interpreted as a direct infringement on her personal convictions and right to free expression.
Fink, who is Jewish, suggested that her advocacy has caused “desperation” among pro-Israel factions within the country. Her unique position as a Jewish voice opposing the actions of the Israeli state in Gaza adds a complex and powerful dimension to her activism, making the alleged attempt to silence her all the more significant.
In a swift and decisive response, the leadership of the PLN’s youth wing, the Juventud Liberacionista, publicly backed Fink. The president of the youth movement, Óscar Rojas, issued a statement strongly condemning any form of censorship and reaffirming the group’s commitment to ideological diversity.
Today we have learned of a situation in which a colleague from our youth wing publicly stated that during a meeting, an attempt was allegedly made to influence her to modify or soften her convictions regarding her pro-Palestine position, a cause that we as the Liberacionista Youth have also supported clearly, decisively, and vehemently.
Óscar Rojas, President of the Liberacionista Youth
Rojas confirmed he had communicated with the central command of the Ramos campaign regarding Fink’s accusations. He reported that campaign officials expressed regret over the reported events and explicitly denied ordering the meeting with Fink. Despite this denial, Rojas emphasized that the principles of free thought are non-negotiable within the party’s youth structures and that the pro-Palestine cause is a matter of human dignity.
Plurality and autonomy are pillars of our movement, and no political space can afford to silence or condition personal convictions when they are based on the defense of human dignity, such as the pro-Palestine struggle.
Óscar Rojas, President of the Liberacionista Youth
This incident places the Álvaro Ramos campaign in a precarious position. While the campaign has formally distanced itself from the alleged censorship attempt, the public resignation of a dedicated activist over a matter of principle highlights potential internal divisions. The controversy forces the campaign to navigate a sensitive international issue that is clearly resonating within its own ranks, testing its commitment to the pluralism it professes to uphold.
