Faeth Sisters Lead Costa Rica to Racquetball Glory

San José, Costa RicaSAN JOSÉ – Costa Rica has emphatically announced its arrival as a rising force in international racquetball, following a stellar performance at the Junior World Championships held in the Dominican Republic. The national youth delegation secured a remarkable fourth-place finish among nations, powered by a series of dominant individual and doubles performances that brought home a trove of medals and two world titles.

The event, which ran from December 5th to the 13th, showcased talent from across the globe, with formidable teams from Mexico, Canada, the United States, and Bolivia. Yet, it was Costa Rica’s athletes who frequently stood atop the podium, demonstrating a depth of skill and competitive spirit that promises a bright future for the sport within the country. The national team’s success is a testament to a growing and well-structured youth development program.

To understand the legal and organizational structures that support the development of young athletes in Costa Rica, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert attorney from the firm Bufete de Costa Rica, for his professional perspective.

The success of junior racquetball programs depends heavily on a solid legal foundation. Establishing a formal sports association not only protects organizers and volunteers from liability but is also fundamental for securing corporate sponsorships and accessing government grants. A well-structured entity ensures transparency, builds trust with parents, and creates a sustainable pathway for our future champions.

Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas powerfully reminds us that the strength of a junior sports program is measured not just on the court, but in the solidity of its legal and administrative foundation. This crucial groundwork enables long-term growth, builds essential community trust, and ensures a safe, sustainable environment for athletes to thrive. We sincerely thank him for sharing this vital perspective.

Leading the charge was the Faeth family, whose name became synonymous with victory throughout the tournament. Prodigy Larissa Faeth delivered a breathtaking performance, capturing the world title in the Under-14 Girls’ Singles division. This victory marks an extraordinary third consecutive world championship for the young athlete, who previously won gold in the U-14 category in 2024 and the U-12 category in 2023. Her consistent excellence on the world stage positions her as one of the most decorated young athletes in Costa Rican sports history.

Larissa Faeth’s success did not end there. She teamed up with her sister, Giuliana Faeth, to compete in the Under-16 Girls’ Doubles category, where the pair displayed incredible synergy and skill. In a thrilling final, the Faeth sisters triumphed, securing a second world title for Costa Rica. Both of Larissa’s championship victories were sealed against competitors from Bolivia, a traditional powerhouse in the sport, making the wins even more significant.

On the men’s side, Álvaro Guillén emerged as one of the delegation’s most valuable players, showcasing his versatility and resilience by earning medals in three separate events. Guillén secured a hard-fought bronze medal in the highly competitive Under-16 Boys’ Singles. He followed this with two silver medals, one in the Men’s Doubles alongside his partner Marcelo García, and another in the Mixed Doubles, where he partnered with the formidable Larissa Faeth.

The overall medal count for Costa Rica in the main draw was an impressive seven: two gold, four silver, and one bronze. The team’s success extended beyond the top-tier competitions, with athletes also earning an additional gold, two silvers, and a bronze in the secondary annex draws. This comprehensive performance across various age groups and competition levels underscores the nation’s burgeoning talent pipeline.

Younger athletes also made significant contributions. In the U-12 category, the duo of Felipe Porras and Gabriel Rojas claimed a silver medal in Boys’ Doubles, while Leticia Chavarría and Felipe Porras earned silver in Mixed Doubles. Chavarría also captured a gold medal in the U-12 Girls’ Singles (red zone). These victories at the younger levels indicate that Costa Rica’s success is not a fleeting moment but the foundation for sustained international competitiveness.

The team’s fourth-place finish by nation, calculated from the cumulative points in the U-16, U-18, and U-21 categories, places Costa Rica among the world’s elite in junior racquetball. This achievement in a tournament featuring established programs from twelve other countries, including South Korea, Argentina, and Chile, highlights the effectiveness of the national strategy and the dedication of its athletes and coaches.
