By Limón, Costa Rica — Costa Rica has significantly enhanced its port security measures with the installation of two state-of-the-art scanners in Limón and Caldera. This initiative, part of “Operation Sovereignty” launched in July 2023, aims to combat drug trafficking and protect the integrity of Costa Rican exports.
The US government donated the portal-style scanners, valued at $19.5 million, while Costa Rica invested ₡798 million (approximately $1.4 million USD) in infrastructure to support their installation. These advanced scanners are capable of penetrating containers to visualize their internal structure and density, allowing authorities to detect concealed narcotics within legitimate cargo.
