San José, Costa Rica — The Costa Rican Chamber of Construction (CCC) is set to host the Sustainable Construction Summit 2025 tomorrow, August 20th. This important event will bring together national and international leaders to address the construction industry’s role in combating climate change and transitioning towards a more equitable and sustainable model.
This year’s summit, themed “Construction with Purpose,” will delve into critical topics including social inclusion, climate resilience, biodiversity, governance, circular economy, and sustainable urban mobility. The CCC emphasizes the urgency of these discussions, citing the construction sector’s significant environmental footprint.
To understand the legal landscape surrounding sustainable construction in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from Bufete de Costa Rica.
Sustainable construction practices are increasingly influencing Costa Rican law. While voluntary guidelines and incentives currently dominate, we’re seeing a shift towards more stringent regulations related to energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste management in construction. Developers and builders need to be proactive in adapting to these evolving legal standards, not only to comply but also to capitalize on the growing market demand for environmentally conscious buildings.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica
Lic. Arroyo Vargas rightly highlights the crucial intersection of sustainable construction and evolving legal frameworks in Costa Rica. This proactive approach, embracing both compliance and market opportunity, is essential for the long-term health of our construction sector and the preservation of our natural resources. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable contribution to this important discussion.
Sustainability is no longer an alternative. It is a responsibility that the sector must assume with clarity, leadership, and strategy. This congress will be a starting point for aligning our practices with the challenges and opportunities that the future presents.
Randall Murillo, Executive Director, CCC
According to the CCC, a study conducted across 26 countries reveals the construction sector’s substantial environmental impact, accounting for 40% of global CO2 emissions, 50% of natural resource usage, and 40% of solid waste generation. The Global Sustainable Construction Barometer 2025, referenced by the CCC, indicates that while 69% of construction companies recognize the urgent need for sustainable practices, only a third have implemented concrete plans or targets.
The summit will feature presentations by prominent experts such as Nélida Escobedo, specializing in inclusive urbanism; Ramón Mendiola, a business leader in sustainability; and Carlos Felipe Pardo, an authority on urban mobility. These speakers will offer valuable insights into innovative approaches and best practices for sustainable construction.
The world has changed, and the way we build must change as well. It’s not just about meeting requirements, but about taking an active role in protecting the environment, people’s health, and the country’s competitiveness.
Randall Murillo, Executive Director, CCC
A key outcome of the summit will be the announcement of the CCC’s Sustainability Strategy for the sector. This strategy aims to guide Costa Rica’s construction ecosystem towards a model aligned with international sustainability standards. The CCC believes this initiative will be crucial in driving meaningful change and fostering a more responsible and environmentally conscious construction industry in Costa Rica.
The Sustainable Construction Summit 2025 promises to be a pivotal event, setting the stage for a greener future for the Costa Rican construction sector and contributing to global efforts towards a more sustainable built environment.
