The journey begins on the train tracks at 9:00 a.m. from the Cartago station. Aboard the regular passenger train will be Gerardo Ramírez, the iconic lead voice of the legendary band Los Hicsos, accompanied by the Minister of Culture and Youth, Jorge Rodríguez Vives, and a delegation of local artists. The train is scheduled to arrive at the Atlantic Station in San José around 9:47 a.m., where musical performances will welcome the delegation before they head to the National Cultural Center (CENAC).

A highlight of the day is the showcase of three creative entrepreneurs from the Hecho Aquí Fair, demonstrating how artistic talent translates into sustainable cultural businesses. The day’s events at CENAC will culminate at 7:00 p.m. with a free public concert at the Fidel Gamboa Amphitheater, paying tribute to Gerardo Ramírez with performances by Jecsinior Jara, Erick León, and Xiomara Ramírez.
Gerardo Ramírez’s role as the central figure of this year’s celebration honors his six decades of musical contributions with Los Hicsos. Classics like Si te vas and Sabadito alegre are deeply woven into the country’s collective memory. The historical foundation of this celebration dates back to the year 2000, when the Legislative Assembly passed Law No. 8014. This legislation officially designated August 20 as National Artist Day, establishing a legal framework to promote local arts, stimulate cultural economies, and elevate the social visibility of the country’s diverse creative sector.
In addition to the immediate performances, the celebration marks the launch of the Pasaporte Cultural (Cultural Passport), a new national initiative designed to promote long-term domestic cultural tourism. Developed under the Esencial COSTA RICA brand, the passport introduces seven distinct cultural routes—one for each province. This project stems directly from the findings of the National Culture Survey and encourages citizens to explore heritage sites, local museums, and artistic manifestations across the country.
Beyond the capital, the celebration expands into a nationwide network of 56 free activities. Public libraries, civic centers, museums, and regional schools of the National System of Music Education (SINEM) will host concerts, workshops, and exhibitions.
