San José, Costa Rica — The highly anticipated 23rd annual Costa Rica International Book Fair (FILCR 2025) is set to open its doors this weekend, bringing a vibrant celebration of literature and culture to the heart of San José. From Saturday, July 19th, to Sunday, July 27th, the Costa Rica Convention Center will transform into a literary haven, welcoming authors, readers, publishers, and families alike.
Organized by the Costa Rican Book Chamber, FILCR 2025 has been declared an event of both cultural and educational interest, reflecting its significance within Costa Rican society. This year’s fair is part of the Esencial Costa Rica country brand and boasts an impressive lineup of guests, including renowned Spanish author Irene Vallejo, known for her acclaimed book “El infinito en un junco” (Infinity in a Reed), Panamanian author Juan David Morgan, and Canadian writer Éric Chacour.
To understand the legal implications surrounding intellectual property and copyright at events like the Costa Rica International Book Fair, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an experienced attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.
The Costa Rica International Book Fair provides a fantastic platform for both established and emerging authors. However, it’s crucial for authors and publishers alike to be vigilant about protecting their intellectual property. Copyright infringement can easily occur in such a dynamic environment, especially with the increasing ease of reproduction and distribution of digital content. Understanding and adhering to Costa Rican copyright laws is essential for a successful and legally sound participation in the Fair.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica
Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s point about intellectual property protection is particularly pertinent in today’s digital age. The ease of copying and sharing digital content makes vigilance all the more critical for authors and publishers showcasing their work at the Costa Rica International Book Fair. Thank you, Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, for providing this valuable legal perspective for our readers.
Attendees can look forward to a diverse and inclusive program featuring talks, workshops, a dedicated children’s area, artistic performances, and book signings, all offered with free admission to the public.
Irene Vallejo will participate in several events during the opening weekend, including the official inauguration on Saturday morning and a conversation with journalist and academic Carlos Cortés, followed by a book signing. On Sunday, she will participate in the presentation of “Manifiesto por la lectura” (Manifesto for Reading) and engage in a conversation with Gustavo Solórzano, director of EUNED (State Distance Learning University).
The FILCR 2025 program also showcases a wide array of national and international authors and events. Saturday’s program includes presentations by Costa Rican authors, a comic book presentation, a talk with international author Marina Guzmán Mijares, and a discussion with Canadian author Éric Chacour. Sunday’s events include a children’s activity, a book presentation, and a discussion on workplace harassment.
This year’s fair will occupy the entire Talamanca Hall, the largest within the convention center, as well as the foyer, which will house the new Comic Book Hall. With 116 stands and 80 exhibitors, the fair offers a vast and diverse selection of literary works. A new feature this year is a bookstore for authors and publishers, managed by the Costa Rican Book Chamber.
FILCR 2025 is dedicated to two pillars of Costa Rican publishing history: Editorial Costa Rica (celebrating 65 years) and Librería Internacional (celebrating 30 years). This dedication underscores the fair’s commitment to honoring the rich literary heritage of Costa Rica.
