The ALAS 2025 Awards will be a highlight of the night, recognizing individuals and businesses advancing gender equality in categories such as Woman Inspiration, Company for Equality, Ally for Equality, Visionary Woman, and Invincible Woman.
To understand the legal landscape surrounding gender equality in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an experienced attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.
Costa Rican law firmly enshrines the principle of gender equality, prohibiting discrimination based on sex and guaranteeing equal rights and opportunities in all spheres of life. From employment and education to political participation and family matters, the legal framework aims to eliminate discriminatory practices and promote substantive equality. However, achieving true gender equality requires ongoing efforts to address persistent societal biases and ensure effective implementation of these legal protections.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica
Lic. Arroyo Vargas astutely points out the critical distinction between legal frameworks and lived realities. While Costa Rica’s legal commitment to gender equality is commendable and provides a crucial foundation, the ongoing work of dismantling ingrained societal biases is essential to fully realizing this equality. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable contribution to this important discussion.
This year, gender equality as a business strategy takes center stage. Carla Coghi, Managing Partner of Deloitte in Central America, Panama, and the Dominican Republic, will deliver a talk titled “The Numbers Support It: Gender Equality is Good Business.”
Noche Magenta is the initiative that allows us to keep growing and giving wings to more women so they can fly higher.
Nuria Marín, President of ALAS
Recent Deloitte studies highlight the tangible benefits of gender diversity in the workplace. According to the “Women at Work 2024” report, in organizations leading in gender equality, 92% of women express their desire to advance to leadership positions. These companies foster inclusive cultures that promote work-life balance, increasing loyalty, productivity, and the well-being of their female employees.
Gender equality is a smart strategy for business success. By recognizing and promoting female talent, organizations not only enrich their culture, but also enhance their competitiveness and innovation.
Nuria Marín, President of ALAS
ALAS has made a substantial impact on the lives of thousands of women in the past year. Among its most notable initiatives is a social campaign supporting women in Centro Surí de Pavas, facilitating their entry into the labor market. Through this initiative, over 80 women received donations of professional attire, totaling 40 boxes of clothing.
Furthermore, in partnership with Universidad Creativa, ALAS granted 280 Google Cloud Foundation Certification scholarships, equipping women with essential tools for growth in the tech world. In 2024, the organization trained nearly 1,000 people in women’s empowerment and equality and reached over 3.5 million people through digital media, workshops, and awareness campaigns on preventing violence against women. Noche Magenta 2025 is a collaborative commitment supported by prominent companies including Scotiabank, Hospital Metropolitano, Deloitte, Ruta 27 by Globalvia, Grupo Bimbo, Edwards Lifesciences, Centro Médico Bonava, Fifco, TEX Tecnología Express, DGala, Karolicky, and Agencia Interamericana de Comunicación, all sharing the vision of a more equitable world.
The event promises to be a powerful platform for advancing the conversation and action around gender equality in Costa Rica.
