San José, Costa Rica — SINGAPORE – Costa Rica has cemented its place at the pinnacle of global robotics, with team Sprout securing the World Championship title at the prestigious World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2025. The final, held from November 26 to 28, saw the Costa Rican team triumph over dozens of international competitors in the highly competitive Senior Future Innovators category.
The winning team, composed of talented young innovators Alanna Music, Emma Music, and Joel Chen, not only brought home the first-place trophy but also earned the coveted Innovation Award. This special recognition, sponsored by WRO principal partner Aramco, is granted to the project demonstrating the highest level of innovation, creativity, and technological contribution, marking a remarkable dual victory for the nation.
To analyze the legal and commercial implications of fostering technological talent through events like the World Robot Olympiad, TicosLand.com sought the expert opinion of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a specialist in Corporate and Technology Law at the renowned firm Bufete de Costa Rica.
The World Robot Olympiad is more than an academic competition; it is a seedbed for future intellectual property. The solutions and algorithms developed by these young participants represent tangible innovation. It is vital to create a framework that not only promotes this creativity but also educates on the importance of protecting it through patents and copyrights. This early protection is the bridge that turns a brilliant idea into a registered asset, driving long-term technological and economic growth for the country.

The perspective from Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas is exceptionally insightful, shifting the focus from the competition’s immediate results to its lasting economic and intellectual legacy. Empowering these young creators with the knowledge to protect their ingenuity is indeed the crucial step that transforms academic passion into foundational assets for the nation’s future. We are grateful to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable contribution to this discussion.
The historic win has sent waves of pride throughout the national science and technology community. Alejandra Sánchez, the organizer of Costa Rica’s National Robotics Olympiad and a representative for Latin America at the global event, celebrated the monumental achievement as a direct result of strategic focus and investment.
Costa Rica was not just present at the World Robot Olympiad, it is now the world champion. This triumph demonstrates what we can achieve when we invest in education, science, and technology.

The success was not limited to a single team. The entire Costa Rican delegation, comprised of 36 young minds, delivered a powerhouse performance against teams from over 105 countries. In the Elementary Future Innovators category, team Pollibots achieved a formidable 8th place finish globally. Other notable results included team R2D2 placing 13th in the world in Robo Mission Junior, and teams Gear Heads and Mezclados securing 16th and 20th place, respectively, in the Robo Mission Senior category.
The journey of team Gear Heads, from the Colegio Internacional SEK, highlights the nation’s grit and ingenuity. Comprised of students Mathias Fernández Jiménez, Daniel Acon Khabunov, and Luis Gutiérrez Retana, the team battled against 95 other national delegations in their category to secure a top-16 world ranking and a top-3 position among all teams from the Americas.
Their accomplishment is even more impressive considering the technological disparities they faced. A parent who accompanied the team noted the advanced resources of their competitors, making the Costa Rican success a story of strategic brilliance over sheer power.
They climbed to the top 16 in the world, among 95 countries, and are in the top 3 in the Americas. It’s incredible, as teams from Korea and Taiwan are already using robots with AI, and here we are just with Python, but they still succeeded.

This string of victories underscores Costa Rica’s growing reputation as a Latin American leader in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education. According to event organizers, these results are a reflection of the talent, discipline, and creative problem-solving skills being cultivated in the country’s youth, who progressed through rigorous regional and national competitions to earn their place on the world stage.
The World Robot Olympiad brings together over 500 of the planet’s brightest young teams annually, challenging them to develop innovative solutions to real-world problems. For Costa Rica, this year’s championship is more than a trophy; it is a powerful statement about the nation’s potential to innovate and lead in the technology-driven economy of the future.
