Costa Rica Cultivates Agricultural Innovation

Alajuela, Costa Rica — Costa Rica is preparing to host Agrotransformación 2025, a pivotal event focused on driving innovation and knowledge exchange within the nation’s agricultural sector. Scheduled for July 10th and 11th at the TEC campus in San Carlos, Alajuela, this event marks the fifth edition of the initiative spearheaded by PROCOMER (Costa Rica’s Foreign Trade Promoter) under its DESCUBRE program.

With agriculture representing 17% of Costa Rica’s goods exports and employing over 10% of the national workforce, the need for modernization is paramount. Agrotransformación 2025 aims to address this need by showcasing the latest trends in sustainable agriculture, precision farming, emerging technologies, and agribusiness.

For expert legal insight into the evolving landscape of agritech, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a seasoned attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

The increasing integration of technology in agriculture presents exciting opportunities but also unique legal challenges. Areas such as data ownership, intellectual property rights related to software and algorithms, and the regulation of automated farming practices are becoming increasingly critical. Agritech companies operating in Costa Rica must navigate these complexities carefully to ensure compliance and sustainable growth.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s insights underscore a crucial point: the burgeoning agritech sector, while promising for Costa Rica’s agricultural future, must be developed responsibly and within a clear legal framework. Navigating these legal complexities proactively will be essential for fostering innovation and ensuring the long-term success of agritech in the country. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable perspective on this critical intersection of technology and law.

Costa Rica must promote a strengthened, modern agricultural sector, aligned with the demands of a constantly evolving world. Agrotransformación demonstrates the collaborative work we do between the public and private sectors to open new opportunities, especially for our producers and innovators in agriculture, a sector that represents 17% of our country’s goods exports.
Laura López, General Manager of PROCOMER

This year’s event prioritizes the participation of companies involved in processing cassava and plantain—strategic products within the DESCUBRE portfolio—as well as Agritech startups and suppliers crucial to modernizing Costa Rican farming. The event will feature national and international experts, exhibitions, and workshops designed to foster knowledge transfer and networking.

Day one, July 10th, will focus on keynote presentations and exhibitions from companies in services, technology, finance, and various business chambers. Day two, July 11th, features the launch of an Agritech Acceleration Program, discussions with successful agritech startups from Mexico and Colombia, and an open house at Biopro, a successful agroindustrial transformation company.

Specialized workshops will be provided for local entrepreneurs to promote knowledge transfer, innovation, and connections within the agro-business sector. This year’s Agrotransformación is supported by the CRUSA Foundation, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), and TEC San Carlos, all sharing the commitment to fostering a more resilient, competitive, and sustainable agricultural landscape.

Building on the success of previous editions, Agrotransformación 2025 aims to further catalyze innovation and multi-sector collaboration. In 2024, the event drew over 450 participants, featuring 35 stands and conferences emphasizing sustainability and generational integration. Past editions held in the Chorotega and Huetar Caribe regions highlighted novel products such as turmeric, ginger, and edible insects.

Ultimately, Agrotransformación 2025 serves as a key platform for driving the evolution of Costa Rican agriculture, promoting innovation, and strengthening the country’s position in the global market. The DESCUBRE program, which spearheads this initiative, is dedicated to increasing the added value of national production through innovation and technology, ensuring a more inclusive, global, and dynamic agricultural economy.
