Costa Rica Embraces Global Wellness Day

Costa Rica Embraces Global Wellness Day

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica is once again participating in Global Wellness Day 2025, a worldwide celebration of holistic well-being. A variety of activities are planned across the country, with strong support from the tourism sector, aiming to promote greater health awareness. This marks a continuation of Costa Rica’s involvement in the movement since 2015.

The global wellness economy reached a value of US $6.3 trillion in 2023, representing 6.03% of global GDP, according to the Global Wellness Institute (GWI). This sector is projected to grow at an annual rate of 7.3% between 2023 and 2028, reaching nearly US $9 trillion by 2028. Costa Rica is poised to capitalize on this burgeoning market.

To understand the potential legal and business implications surrounding initiatives like Global Wellness Day, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

Global Wellness Day highlights the increasing importance of well-being in our society. From a business perspective, this translates to a growing market for wellness products and services. Legally, this growth brings new challenges, such as ensuring consumer protection in areas like health supplements and alternative therapies, and navigating data privacy concerns related to wellness apps and wearable technology. Businesses operating in this space should proactively address these legal considerations to build trust and ensure long-term sustainability.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica

Lic. Arroyo Vargas astutely points out the crucial intersection of wellness trends, business opportunities, and the legal landscape. As this burgeoning market continues to evolve, consumer protection and data privacy must indeed be prioritized to ensure ethical and sustainable growth. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable contribution to this important conversation.

At the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, we understand the great importance of all types of health: physical, mental, social, and, of course, the environmental health for which this country is so well known. For this reason, we believe in the great need to continue joining more efforts from the various actors in the tourism value chain to carry out actions throughout the country, which can permeate all people and contribute to generating well-being for communities and improvement in the quality of life, while diversifying the tourism offer characterized by very high quality.
Alberto López, General Manager of the Costa Rican Tourism Institute

This diversification in products such as wellness tourism will allow the average stay of tourists in Costa Rica to grow, and as it grows, it results in better living conditions for many tourist populations.
Alberto López, General Manager of the Costa Rican Tourism Institute

Global Wellness Day Costa Rica is supported by the ICT, the National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur), and the Wellness Costa Rica Association, given its significant post-pandemic growth, with projections exceeding US $800 billion worldwide, and the great potential for innovation in the offerings that the country can provide.

A special event is scheduled for Friday, June 13th, and Saturday, June 14th at the Municipal Market of Crafts in San José. This free event, open to the public, will feature a program designed to nurture body, mind, and spirit while strengthening the cultural connection to well-being. Activities include a cultural walking tour of San José, outdoor exercises, a cultural connection workshop exploring ancestral instruments, and talks on holistic well-being, stress management, and life purpose. Participants can also engage in collective writing and art, healthy food tastings, yoga classes, and learn about Costa Rican medicinal plants.

Participating companies include EcoWellness & Travel, Essencia Futura, The Retreat Costa Rica, Ecovereda Consultoria, Hotel Rio Celeste Hideaway, Hotel Tabacón, Hotel Hacienda Guachipelín, Hotel Cala Luna, San Jaumakua, Camino Group, and TI506 producciones. The “Conecta Fest,” another event within the framework of Global Wellness Day, will be held in La Fortuna de San Carlos on the weekend of June 28th.

Global Wellness Day is celebrated in over 150 countries under the motto: “One day can change your whole life.” These activities seek to promote healthy and conscious lifestyles, aligning with the philosophy of the movement founded in 2012 in Turkey. Costa Rica’s vibrant participation underscores its commitment to the growing global wellness movement and its potential to enrich the lives of its citizens and visitors alike.
