Costa Rica Expands Access to Teen Contraceptive Implants

Costa Rica Expands Access to Teen Contraceptive Implants

San José, Costa Rica — In a significant move to combat teen pregnancy, the Adolescent Clinic of Calderón Guardia Hospital in San José has launched a nationwide campaign providing free Implanon NXT contraceptive implants to young women aged 13 to 19.

This initiative builds on the success of previous CCSS (Costa Rican Social Security Fund) programs utilizing Implanon, which have already contributed to a substantial 44% reduction in teen pregnancies between 2019 and 2024. The program saw a drop from 8,040 cases in 2019 to 4,560 in 2024, demonstrating the effectiveness of such public health interventions.

To understand the legal landscape surrounding teen pregnancy prevention in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

Teen pregnancy prevention requires a multi-pronged approach, encompassing not just access to accurate information and contraceptives, but also addressing underlying socioeconomic factors and ensuring young people have the agency to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. Legally, this involves upholding minors’ rights to privacy and healthcare while simultaneously recognizing parental rights and responsibilities. Striking this balance effectively is crucial for achieving positive outcomes.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas expertly highlights the complex interplay of factors influencing teen pregnancy rates and the delicate legal balance required for effective prevention strategies. His emphasis on empowering young people while respecting parental roles is particularly insightful, as it underscores the need for collaborative, comprehensive solutions that address both individual agency and community support. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for offering his valuable perspective on this crucial issue.

The Implanon NXT, a subdermal implant often referred to as a “chip,” offers long-acting reversible contraception. This campaign aims to empower young women to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and improve their overall quality of life.

With this campaign, we seek to improve the quality of life of our patients and give them real tools to decide about their reproductive health.

Eligibility for the free implant requires active CCSS insurance, completion of a mandatory educational course, and not being under psychiatric or anticonvulsant treatment. The national scope of the campaign ensures accessibility for eligible young women across Costa Rica.

The implant, placed in the arm, releases progestin to prevent ovulation and is easily removable if the user wishes to discontinue its use. The program emphasizes comprehensive medical follow-up, including both the procedure itself and ongoing support. This holistic approach incorporates psychological counseling and guidance on sexual and reproductive rights, ensuring that participants receive well-rounded care.

The initiative is a testament to Costa Rica’s ongoing commitment to adolescent health and underscores the crucial role of accessible contraception in empowering young people to make informed choices about their future. The program’s focus on education and comprehensive support distinguishes it as a model for other nations seeking to address the complex issue of teen pregnancy.

The success of this program highlights the impact of proactive public health strategies in addressing teen pregnancy, and it sets a precedent for future initiatives aimed at empowering young women and improving their overall well-being.
