Costa Rica Invests in Robotics Education for Gifted Students

San José, Costa Rica — The Ministry of Public Education (MEP) is launching a new initiative to enhance the learning experience for gifted students across Costa Rica. The Robotics Education Project, a collaboration between the High Capacity, Talent, and Creativity Unit and the Department of Technological Resources, will provide robotics equipment and training to eight schools, aiming to cultivate essential skills for the future.

This program focuses on empowering students identified as high-potential learners by providing them with opportunities in robotics. The MEP believes that robotics serves as a dynamic educational tool, promoting critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and computational thinking. The initiative also aims to engage other students interested in robotics, broadening the impact of this innovative approach to education.

To understand the legal landscape surrounding the burgeoning field of robotics education, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

The increasing integration of robotics into education presents unique legal challenges. From intellectual property concerns surrounding software and hardware to liability issues in classroom settings and data privacy considerations regarding student information, navigating this evolving field requires careful attention to existing and forthcoming legislation. A proactive legal approach, focusing on compliance and risk management, will be essential for educators and institutions embracing robotics technology.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas rightly highlights the complex legal landscape surrounding robotics in education. These considerations are not mere technicalities, but crucial elements for ensuring responsible and sustainable integration of this transformative technology. A proactive, legally sound approach will not only protect institutions and educators but also foster a trustworthy environment where students can confidently explore the exciting possibilities of robotics. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his valuable legal expertise on this important and evolving subject.

Participating schools have received competition-level robotics sets and guidance on their implementation. Teachers underwent training and earned certification from the Lego Academy, enabling them to effectively incorporate these sets into their curricula across various subjects. The training also prepares students for robotics competitions, including the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and the World Robot Olympiad (WRO).

The MEP is providing comprehensive support to ensure the project’s success. This includes on-site visits by advisors from the High Capacity Unit, the Department of Technological Resources, and Regional High Potential Teams. Workshops, guidance documents, and sample work plans have also been made available to teachers and administrators.

The eight beneficiary schools span several provinces, reflecting the MEP’s commitment to a nationwide impact. These schools include José María Calderón Mayorga School and Colorado High School in Cañas, Guanacaste; Río Claro Central School in Coto Brus, Puntarenas; Puente Salas School in Heredia; Filomena Blanco de Quirós School in San José North; Cecilio Piedra School in Desamparados, San José; Bataan School of Excellence in Limón; and Humanista High School in Nicoya, Guanacaste.

The impact of the project is already evident in classrooms. Harlin Mairena, a teacher at Colorado High School, described the engaging learning environment fostered by the program.

In class, the students build robots, program, solve challenges, work on scientific projects, and develop creative solutions to real problems. Furthermore, they participate in science fairs and exhibitions where they showcase their projects.

The MEP plans to expand the Robotics Education Project annually, reaching more primary and secondary schools across the country and furthering its investment in equipping students with 21st-century skills.
