By leveraging the natural topography and high altitude of the Bijagua region, the lodges are naturally cooled by mountain breezes, eliminating the need for energy-intensive air conditioning systems entirely. Furthermore, the villas at Origins Astral feature living green roofs that regulate indoor temperatures. Hot water for showers and guest facilities is supplied via solar-panel-heated tanks, while outdoor wood-fired jacuzzis are heated using fallen timber recovered directly from the property’s 45-hectare estate after tropical storms.
Circular economic principles dictate the property’s daily operations. In alignment with guidelines established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), single-use plastics have been entirely eliminated from all guest accommodations. All graywater generated on-site is treated and repurposed for landscape irrigation, while an advanced vermicomposting system utilizes earthworms bred on the property to convert organic waste into rich, natural fertilizer for the lodge’s agricultural gardens.
The property also maintains an internal laboratory where organic bath amenities are crafted. Using Ylang-Ylang trees grown on-site, the lodge produces chemical-free, biodegradable soaps and shampoos presented in refillable containers. This self-contained ecosystem is further enhanced by the protection of 25 hives of native stingless Melipona bees, which serve as critical pollinators for the local flora and provide honey for the resort’s culinary team. To maintain its physical infrastructure, the lodge operates its own woodworking shop, processing salvaged timber to repair floors, ceilings, and furniture.
Socioeconomic integration forms the final pillar of this transparent model. Approximately 95% of the staff at Origins Luxury Lodge is hired from the surrounding rural communities, and the hotel collaborates with over 30 local suppliers, positively impacting roughly 300 residents in the region. These grassroots efforts are bolstered by strategic environmental alliances. Through a partnership with the reforestation initiative Planta mi Árbol, guests have funded the planting of 500 native trees to offset travel emissions, while a collaboration with CR Wildlife actively supports the preservation of the endangered Central American tapir, a keystone species essential for regional seed dispersal and forest regeneration.
