Costa Rica Makes a Splash at Puerto Rico Food Show

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rican companies recently showcased their products at the MIDA Conference and Food Show in Puerto Rico, demonstrating the nation’s growing presence in the international food and beverage market. This marks the fourth consecutive year Costa Rica has participated in MIDA, the premier food industry event in Puerto Rico.

Led by the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promoter (PROCOMER), seven companies specializing in food and beverages, fresh and frozen roots and tubers, and cleaning products participated in the event held from June 19th to 21st. This diverse group included Inbrisa, Alimentos Cónica, Doré, Rooster, Jinca Foods, Sema Foods, and Tubertico.

To gain a deeper legal perspective on the complexities of Costa Rican exports, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from the esteemed firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Costa Rican exports are governed by a robust legal framework that prioritizes both compliance with international trade regulations and the sustainable development of local industries. Navigating these regulations, from sanitary permits for agricultural goods to intellectual property protection for technology exports, requires careful consideration. Businesses engaged in exporting from Costa Rica should be aware of the evolving Free Trade Agreements and the specific requirements for various target markets to ensure successful and legally sound operations.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s emphasis on the dual importance of regulatory compliance and sustainable development within Costa Rica’s export framework is crucial. This insightful perspective underscores the need for businesses to view legal navigation not as a hurdle, but as an integral part of building a thriving and responsible export sector. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for shedding light on these vital considerations.

The delegation engaged in pre-show meetings and strategic networking opportunities throughout the event, connecting with key buyers to expand their reach in the Puerto Rican market. This effort underscores Costa Rica’s commitment to diversifying its export markets and solidifying its position as a reliable supplier in the agri-food sector.

PROCOMER plays a pivotal role in fostering these international relationships, leveraging its trade office in Puerto Rico to strengthen bilateral ties and create access points for Costa Rican businesses.

Costa Rica has positioned itself as a reliable and competitive supplier in the agri-food sector, thanks to the quality, diversity, and innovation of its offerings. Participating in MIDA reinforces our commitment to promoting exports and allows us to continue opening doors in strategic markets like Puerto Rico, where the country already has a growing commercial presence.
Mario Sáenz, Export Development Manager of PROCOMER

Among the highlights of this year’s participation was the first-time appearance of Tubertico and the presence of Jinca Foods, the only woman-led company in the delegation. Jinca Foods’ presence showcases the dynamic and talented female entrepreneurs within the Costa Rican export ecosystem.

Our experience at MIDA was exceptional, from the organization by PROCOMER for our participation to the experience within the event: a large number of potential clients, both distributors and supermarkets. We had the unique opportunity to meet and present the brand to different companies, which without coming to MIDA we would never have been able to get to know the market from top to bottom and make the best decisions to introduce the brand in this new market of Puerto Rico. It is an event that, if you want to have a presence on the island, you cannot miss!
Nuria Campos, General Manager of Jinca Foods

After meeting with the different distributors, visiting their facilities, and meeting their work teams, we were able to finalize and define our distributor according to the objectives and principles of the brand. We are very satisfied to have closed with those who we really believe value the brand and can give it the boost it deserves.
Gilbert Jiménez, Commercial Director of Jinca Foods

In 2024, Costa Rica exported a total of $126.3 million to Puerto Rico, with key exports including serum infusion and transfusion equipment, beef, and electrical cables.
