Less than two weeks after its September 9th launch, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) has paused acceptance of new applications due to unexpectedly high demand and initial technical difficulties. The move aims to prioritize support for the thousands of citizens currently experiencing activation issues.
Nearly 30,000 Costa Ricans have applied for the digital cédula, demonstrating significant public interest in the modernized identification system. Of these, the TSE reports 16,449 successful activations. However, a backlog of 13,189 pending activations has prompted officials to temporarily close the application portal.
