Coopeguanacaste has emerged as a pioneer in this initiative, strategically placing fast-charging stations in high-traffic tourist destinations such as El Coco, Playa Flamingo, Santa Cruz, Nicoya, and Paquera. The cooperative’s open payment system, accepting any debit or credit card, has set a precedent for accessibility and ease of use.
Coopelesca has also made significant strides, installing 120 kW fast chargers in rural communities like La Fortuna, Santa Rosa de Pocosol, Ciudad Quesada, and Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí. These stations are equipped with user-friendly features like benches, roofs, and even solar panels, demonstrating a commitment to both functionality and sustainability. Furthermore, Coopelesca provides 120 and 240-volt outlets for portable chargers, ensuring backup charging options.
The investments made by the cooperatives are proof that, even in rural contexts, it is possible to offer advanced technological solutions that promote both energy efficiency and the development of our communities.

While Coopesantos and Coopealfaroruiz have focused primarily on medium-charge stations due to strategic location and topographical considerations, both are exploring the potential for future fast-charging infrastructure. Coopealfaroruiz plans to install its first three fast-charging stations in the future, while Coopesantos, which already offers medium-charge stations at all its offices, is analyzing the investment in fast chargers.
These investments in EV charging infrastructure, despite the higher costs associated with rural installations, represent a significant step towards attracting visitors, boosting local economies, and integrating traditionally remote communities. According to a study by CFIA, “Thinking about Costa Rica 2025,” fast-charging installations in rural areas can incur up to 30% higher operational and infrastructural costs compared to urban settings, highlighting the cooperatives’ commitment to serving these areas.
