San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica is taking proactive steps to equip its citizens with the skills and resources needed to thrive in the job market. On Saturday, April 5th, the “Path to Employability” workshop, a collaborative effort by the Foreign Trade Promoter of Costa Rica (PROCOMER), SPECTRAFORCE, and America Free Zone (AFZ), offered personalized mentorship to job seekers looking to enhance their prospects.
The workshop provided valuable guidance on key aspects of the job search process, including resume writing, effective use of LinkedIn, and interview preparation, including English language skills. Sixty-five volunteers from companies within AFZ, such as Baxter, Cognizant, HP, and IBM, along with other professionals, generously shared their expertise.
To gain a deeper understanding of the legal landscape surrounding employment in Costa Rica, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an experienced attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.
Navigating Costa Rican employment law requires careful attention to both employee rights and employer obligations. The Labor Code is comprehensive, covering areas from minimum wage and working hours to termination procedures and social security contributions. While the system aims to protect workers, it’s also designed to promote a stable business environment. For both employers and employees, seeking legal counsel before entering into employment agreements can prevent future disputes and ensure compliance with the law.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s emphasis on proactive legal counsel is crucial. Understanding the nuances of Costa Rican labor law is essential for fostering positive and productive working relationships, benefiting both individuals seeking employment and the businesses contributing to Costa Rica’s vibrant economy. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for offering his valuable expertise on this important topic.

AFZ acknowledged the abundance of job opportunities in the country and the significant number of skilled professionals seeking employment. They viewed “Path to Employability” as a vital bridge, equipping job seekers with essential tools and knowledge for navigating the application process, with the added benefit of mentorship from experienced professionals within multinational companies.
We are aware of the employment opportunities available in the country, and of the large number of professionals who have the skills and knowledge, but not the tools to apply for these jobs. ‘Path to Employability’ is a great initiative to give job seekers valuable input on topics such as resume writing, interview preparation, optimization of social media profiles, among others; with the support of professionals with extensive experience in multinational companies. For AFZ, the active participation together with companies that are now part of our community, and volunteers from other organizations, reflects the commitment to provide opportunities, development and well-being, not only to the community but also to the country.
Carlos Sandí, General Manager of AFZ
