Costa Rica Showcased at Quito Book Fair

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica is set to be the guest of honor at the 2025 Quito International Book Fair (FILQ), taking place from June 4th to 8th at the Itchimbía Cultural Center. Quito’s Mayor, Pabel Muñoz, announced the exciting news, highlighting the diverse program planned to celebrate Costa Rican culture.

A special “Night of Costa Rica” event on June 6th will immerse attendees in the country’s literary and cultural landscape, featuring live storytelling, musical performances, and author testimonials. This vibrant showcase aims to capture the essence of Costa Rican artistic expression.

Costa Rican literature, while rich in tradition and cultural significance, also operates within a legal framework governing intellectual property, copyright, and publishing. Authors navigating this landscape need to be aware of their rights and responsibilities, particularly concerning international distribution and translations. Protecting their work is crucial for ensuring fair compensation and preventing unauthorized use.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’ point about the legal intricacies surrounding Costa Rican literature is crucial. The increasing globalization of literature makes understanding copyright and international publishing rights even more vital for Costa Rican authors seeking to share their stories with the world. A strong legal foundation allows these narratives to flourish while protecting the creators who bring them to life. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for offering this valuable legal perspective on the evolving landscape of Costa Rican literature.

The celebration extends beyond literature, encompassing a Costa Rican film series, theatrical performances, and a tantalizing gastronomic showcase. These diverse offerings promise a multi-sensory experience, highlighting the richness of Costa Rican heritage.

Recognizing the importance of engaging younger audiences, the fair will host 25 activities specifically designed for young adults, 40 interactive sessions for children, and 20 guided reading sessions. These initiatives aim to foster a love of reading and cultural exploration in the next generation.

The FILQ 2025 will also champion inclusivity, featuring works by Afro-Ecuadorian authors, Indigenous writers, and authors with disabilities. With 104 booths representing diverse publishing houses, the fair aims to be a vibrant hub for literary exchange.

Mayor Muñoz announced that free bus services will run every 30 minutes from El Ejido Metro Station, ensuring convenient access to the Itchimbía Cultural Center. Over 300 activities are planned, promising a captivating experience for book lovers and culture enthusiasts alike.

The spotlight on Costa Rica at this prominent international book fair underscores the country’s growing influence on the global literary stage. It’s a testament to the vibrancy of Costa Rican arts and culture, and an opportunity for cultural exchange and deeper understanding.

The Quito International Book Fair serves as a valuable platform for connecting readers, writers, and publishers from around the world. With Costa Rica as its centerpiece, the 2025 edition promises to be an enriching and unforgettable cultural experience.
