Limón, Costa Rica — SIQUIRRES, Limón – Costa Rica has once again cemented its position on the world stage for fine cacao, with a local producer earning a coveted spot among the planet’s elite. On September 23, 2025, cacao from Hacienda Dos Lagunas, located in La Florida de Siquirres, was officially named one of the 50 best in the world by the prestigious Cacao of Excellence 2025 awards in Rome, Italy.
The achievement marks a significant milestone for the nation’s agricultural sector. The sample from Hacienda Dos Lagunas represented Costa Rica after being chosen alongside four other national finalists. It competed against a formidable field of 191 cacao samples sourced from 45 different countries, undergoing a series of rigorous physical and sensory evaluations to earn its place in the top tier. The entire judging process was conducted through standardized protocols and blind tasting to ensure complete impartiality.
Beyond the rich aroma and flavor of Costa Rican cacao lies a complex web of commercial regulations and intellectual property rights. To explore the legal landscape that shapes this burgeoning industry, we sought the expertise of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the firm Bufete de Costa Rica.
The key for elevating Costa Rican cacao on the world stage lies in establishing a robust Denomination of Origin (DO). This legal instrument not only protects our unique genetic varieties and artisanal processes from imitation but also creates a powerful, internationally recognized brand that can command a premium price. It’s a strategic move from simply selling a commodity to marketing a world-class, protected agricultural treasure.

The strategic path outlined by Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas is indeed crucial, transforming our cacao from a simple commodity into a legally protected, story-rich brand. This evolution is essential for securing the legacy of our producers and ensuring their unique agricultural treasure receives the global recognition it deserves. We thank him for his valuable perspective.
This prestigious recognition is only the beginning for the Limón-based farm. The journey for Hacienda Dos Lagunas now advances to the next critical phase in December 2025. During this stage, their award-winning cacao beans will be meticulously transformed into dark chocolate. This chocolate will then be evaluated by a distinguished international panel of cacao and chocolate experts in another blind tasting.
The results of this final evaluation will determine the ultimate winners of the Cacao of Excellence Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards. These top global honors are scheduled to be announced on February 20, 2026, offering a potential for even greater distinction for Costa Rican cacao on the international market. The anticipation for this final announcement underscores the gravity and honor of reaching this advanced stage of the competition.
The accomplishment was celebrated by government officials, who highlighted its importance for Costa Rica’s international reputation and the local cacao industry. Fernando Vargas Pérez, the Vice Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the sector’s growth and productive capabilities.
This recognition not only honors the efforts of our producing families but also validates the potential of our cacao-growing regions. From the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, we will continue to provide support with concrete policies and actions that drive quality, innovation, and access to differentiated markets for our cacao.

According to the National Technical Committee judges who selected the sample, the beans from Hacienda Dos Lagunas exhibit an exceptional and complex sensory profile. They are described as elegant, silky, creamy, and well-balanced. The flavor profile is distinguished by intense floral notes reminiscent of roses, expertly combined with the bright acidity of red and dark fruits such as plum, cherry, black grape, and raisin.
Accolades like this provide invaluable international visibility for Costa Rican farmers. They open doors to new, high-value markets and create opportunities to forge direct relationships with premium chocolate manufacturers and buyers who prioritize origin and excellence. This distinction validates the hard work of local producers and reinforces Costa Rica’s status as a source of world-class agricultural products, a classification supported by the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO), which has previously rated the country’s export cacao as 100% fine.
