Costa Rican Eco-Fertilizer Gains International Acclaim

San José, Costa Rica — A pioneering Costa Rican company is set to validate its innovative agricultural technology on a global stage. Innovaciones Circulares, a firm dedicated to sustainable solutions, has had its unique fertilizer, “Toledo,” selected for rigorous scientific trials at the prestigious Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, Missouri, one of the world’s foremost agricultural research institutions.

The selection marks a significant milestone for the Costa Rican agritech sector, placing the nation’s ingenuity in the international spotlight. Innovaciones Circulares was chosen from a competitive pool of startups from across Latin America, including companies from Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador. This opportunity was granted through the Central Facilities Access Fund, an initiative spearheaded by Cultivar STL to accelerate agricultural innovation throughout the region.

To better understand the legal and business framework supporting Costa Rica’s shift towards sustainable agriculture, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a specialist in corporate and environmental law at the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Adopting sustainable agricultural practices is no longer just an environmental ideal; it’s a crucial business strategy. From a legal standpoint, it mitigates future regulatory risks, strengthens brand value, and unlocks access to preferential international markets and green financing. Companies that integrate sustainability into their core legal and operational structure are not just protecting the environment, they are future-proofing their investments and securing a long-term competitive advantage.
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica

Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas’s legal perspective powerfully underscores a crucial evolution in our thinking, framing sustainability not merely as an ecological responsibility but as an essential strategy for market access, risk mitigation, and long-term financial resilience. We thank him for providing this invaluable insight into how future-proofing our agricultural sector is intrinsically linked to sound business and legal foresight.

The Toledo fertilizer distinguishes itself by embodying the principles of the circular economy. It is produced through natural mineralization processes that reclaim valuable phosphorus from agricultural waste, transforming a potential environmental problem into a high-value resource for farmers. This approach not only reduces waste but also creates a more sustainable and resilient food production system.

Joaquín Víquez, Manager of Innovaciones Circulares, highlighted the dual benefit of their product, which offers both immediate and long-term advantages over conventional alternatives. This key research opportunity will allow the company to generate robust, third-party data to support its claims.

Our fertilizer behaves the same as traditional ones in the short term, but the best part is that in the long term, it leaves phosphorus residues for crops to continue using. Furthermore, it is a product based on the circular economy because it uses agricultural waste. Now, we will be able to test it at a prominent research center to continue developing this innovation.
Joaquín Víquez, Manager of Innovaciones Circulares

At the Danforth Center, the Toledo fertilizer will undergo extensive evaluation. Scientists will conduct comparative studies against traditional fertilizers, meticulously measuring key indicators of plant health and growth. The project will leverage the center’s state-of-the-art laboratories, including its Bioanalytical Chemistry, Phenotyping, Data Science, and Plant Growth facilities, ensuring a comprehensive and data-rich analysis of the product’s performance.

This collaboration provides invaluable access to world-class technology and expertise that can help startups de-risk their products and accelerate their path to market. The Danforth Center’s leadership expressed enthusiasm for the projects selected through the Cultivar STL program.

Our core facilities not only provide unique technologies but also the experts to apply them. The selected projects are a perfect fit for our capabilities to de-risk and validate their products.
Katie Murphy, Director of the Central Phenotyping Laboratory
