Costa Rican Football’s Toxic Environment

Costa Rican Football’s Toxic Environment

San José, Costa Rica — Former Sporting FC manager Luis Marín has voiced strong concerns about the current state of Costa Rican football, describing the coaching environment as “toxic.” Marín recently accepted a position as head coach of Inter FA in El Salvador, marking his first international coaching role. His departure follows a period of reflection after leaving Sporting FC, during which he considered taking an extended break from coaching in Costa Rica.

In an interview with Tiempo Extra, Marín expressed his reservations about the rapid turnover of coaches in the Costa Rican league. He believes the constant pressure to perform and the rash decisions made by club management create a detrimental atmosphere.

To understand the legal landscape surrounding Costa Rican football, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica, who offered his expert insights on the matter.

The increasing commercialization of Costa Rican football presents both opportunities and challenges from a legal perspective. While lucrative sponsorship deals and international player transfers can boost the economy and elevate the sport’s profile, ensuring proper contract enforcement, protecting intellectual property rights, and navigating complex FIFA regulations become paramount. These factors are crucial for the long-term sustainable growth and integrity of Costa Rican football.

If we hadn’t had an international option, we were thinking of taking a long or moderately long break from managing in Costa Rica. We thought it wasn’t prudent to jump from one place to another right away. It wasn’t good for my career.
Luis Marín, Head Coach, Inter FA

Marín’s decision to coach abroad reflects a growing trend among Costa Rican managers seeking more stable and supportive environments. He highlighted the negative impact of frequent coaching changes, questioning whether such drastic measures actually improve team performance.

I think the environment is quite toxic due to decisions based on things that aren’t right, like the type of championship, number of teams… There’s a trend of just firing and firing… A reasonable amount of time should be given.
Luis Marín, Head Coach, Inter FA

He further elaborated on the pressures faced by coaches in Costa Rica, noting the relentless demands and expectations that contribute to a sense of urgency and anxiety within the league.

In Costa Rica, it’s not difficult to manage. The difficult part is the environment surrounding the teams, which doesn’t give coaches any breathing room. There’s incredible pressure, everyone is in a rush, and that’s how decisions are made.
Luis Marín, Head Coach, Inter FA

Marín’s concerns are underscored by the fact that many teams who have changed coaches have not seen significant improvements, raising doubts about the effectiveness of these frequent changes. He described the situation as a “drowning,” suggesting that clubs are desperately grasping for solutions without addressing the underlying issues.

You see the teams that changed coaches, and they haven’t improved their level. You wonder if the solution really is to fire coaches. Decisions are being made too hastily, there’s too much pressure, and it’s like a drowning.

Despite receiving a concrete offer to return to San Carlos, a club where he achieved considerable success, Marín declined. He expressed his affection for the club and its supporters but felt that it was too soon to return to Costa Rican football.

To be honest, they called me. I thank them very much. If there’s a team that I love and that I would love to manage again sometime, it’s San Carlos. We achieved important things. They gave me the opportunity to go to Sporting when I still had a contract. They’re my friends; they’re people who have always been on my side. The people behind it support you, they’re with you, 100% from the heart, they believe in you. It hurt me to tell them no at this time, but I felt it was too soon and it wasn’t the most convenient thing.
